Have you ever checked your Blood Pressure  lately ?
GET TESTED AND KEEP IT DOWN
KEEP B.P. WOES AT BAY

These days hypertension is a very common problem. It is a lifestyle disorder- not something you are born with , but something acquired due to a faulty lifestyle.

High blood pressure can be termed as the bane of modernization. This disease, which harasses thousands today, is a result of a destructive lifestyle, smoking, obesity, alcohol intake, insulin resistance and stress. It has three major consequences- stroke, heart attack and kidney damage. Therefore maintaining your blood pressure is unquestionably important. While some people may require medication to keep their blood pressure under control, most people can control it with proper diet, weight loss, vitamin supplements and stress management. Eating your way out of high blood pressure should be your number one choice of treatment.

Hypertension or high blood pressure is one of the most common health conditions in which the force of blood against your artery wall is high enough to cause heart disease. Your blood pressure is determined both by the amount of blood your heart pumps and the amount of resistance to blood flow in your arteries. The more blood your heart pumps and the narrower your arteries, the higher will be yours blood pressure.

Usually hypertension is defined as blood pressure above 140/90, and is considered severe if the pressure is above 180/120. High blood pressure often has no symptoms. Over time, if untreated, it can cause health conditions, such as heart disease and stroke. Eating a healthier diet with less salt, exercising regularly and taking medication can help lower blood pressure.

If a stress sensitive person is exposed to stressful conditions over a prolonged period of time, their blood vessels get constricted. This in turn, causes the blood pressure to rise.

About 200 millions  Indians have hypertension, and most don't know it. Over time, the condition can cause kidney failure, stroke, even blindness. Therefore one should get their B P tested and also monitor it once a month. Only 40% of urban Indians with hypertension know they have it, and only 20% are taking active measures to keep it in check.

Hypertension can cause heart attack. What is heart attack? A heart attack  is caused by the partial or complete blockage of an artery that supplies blood to your heart. if you can walk for more than 500 m in 6 minutes, or travel to the hills, Amarnath or Mansarovar Yatra. If you can climb the stairs or walk 2 km at a stretch comfortably, you are cardiac fit. Gender : Men Women one in four.

⚠️ "Screening without treatment serves NO purpose. Hypertension requires lifestyle modification, diet  and medication".
Sunflower oil, peanut oil, and sesame oil decrease the risk of developing heart disease.
Introduction
Have you checked your blood pressure recently? Has anyone in your family  or friends have elevated blood pressure?  If a hyper tension person follows dietary and lifestyle changes are recommended in Ayurveda, high blood pressure can be managed effectively.

High blood pressure has no symptoms which is why it is often left undiagnosed or diagnosed in later stages when it is difficult to reverse the condition. However it can be managed and kept under control by following a strict diet (eating healthy and less salty or spicy food), exercising regularly and taking medication. A couple of Ayurvedic home remedies can also prove to be very effective in bringing down high blood pressure.
Hypertension is not a disease but a trait (a particular characteristic that can produce a particular type of behavior). Heart pumps out blood for circulation all over the body. It rushes out overcoming the resistance created by arterial walls. The pressure is called blood pressure. It is essential part of circulatory mechanism. As the heart pumps blood in pulses, the blood pressure has a peak when the blood volume is maximum in the arteries and a trough (a low point) when the blood volume is minimum. The blood pressure at the maximum is called systolic blood pressure and the blood pressure at minimum is called diastolic  blood pressure. A persistent reading above 140 systolic and/ 90 diastolic mm of mercury indicates hypertension. It starts affecting the blood vessels and other organs. After birth of a child, blood pressure starts increasing and reaches about 120/80.

Hypertension is defined as sustained high blood pressure over five weeks or more. It is a very common problem. It is a lifestyle disorder- not something you are born with, but something acquired due to a faulty lifestyle. Hypertension or high blood pressure is a common health condition, asymptomatic, readily detectable, easily treatable and often leads to lethal complications if left untreated.

Hypertension is a chronic disease. It can be controlled with medication, but it cannot be cured. Therefore, patients need to continue with the treatment and lifestyle modifications as advised by their doctor, and attend regular medical follow up, usually for life

Prolong use of saturated fats causes constriction and hardening of arteries which may result in hypertension, cancer, heart attack, and other related ailments.

Heart aliments remain the biggest killer, Here is what you can do :
What are the lifestyle changes one can follow to protect the heart?

The holy grail of any pandemic is ‘prevention’ and this calls for the age old trio of
  • 45 minutes daily exercise,
  •  balanced diet and
  • positive mindset.
  • Further, recent studies have indicated that being even slightly overweight is a major risk factor across age groups; obesity isn't just a cosmetic concern. It is a medical problem that increases your risk of other diseases and health problems, such as heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and certain cancers. It also increases the risk of COVID complications substantially.
  •  So measure your weight daily- and try and be as close to your ideal weight as possible; maintaining a BMI (Body Mass Index ) between 18.5-24.9.
  • Steam inhalation and daily consumption of vitamin C, vitamin D, Zinc and B complex are a must. However, it is important to check your levels and get a dosage prescribed by the doctor.

The March 2020 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine spoke of the high transmission of SARS-CoV-2 probably arising from other factors, including high viral loads in the upper respiratory tract and the potential for the infected person to shed and transmit virus while asymptomatic. The authors discussed reported high titres of virus in oro-pharynx early in the course of disease and possibility of increased infectivity during the period of minimal symptoms.” Steam inhalation can be of great help in this scenario to prevent or reduce severity of COVID. Thanks to the lockdown, staying locked up at home for a long time and the uncertainty around the coronavirus pandemic can be a reason for people to get stressed and start having negative thoughts, which is not good for the heart. It is very important to stay calm and be positive. Yoga in the mornings can be a great balancing factor for all. Maintain your social network even remotely and communicate with your friends and family on a regular basis.

"17th Oct 2020 World Hypertension day."

4 Stages of Hypertension :

  1. Mild , Pre-hypertension
  2. Moderate
  3. Severe
Hypertension is divided into two groups:
1- Essential hypertension: This group represents almost 90% in which cause is not known.
2- Secondary hypertension Comprises of about 12-15%  due to renal, cardiac, gestational & drug induced cause. Others include :
Pulmonary artery hypertension : Hypoxemia -  it is abnormally low levels of oxygen in blood.
Hypertension in pregnancy - pre-eclampsia

According to Ayurveda : Heart is the seat of ojas. According to Caraka heart disease originates from conventional causes such as dietary indiscretion, emotional disturbance, excessive exposure to sun and too much or too little activity. When vata (air) consequently gets perturbed, it enters the heart to produce heart disease.
Hypertension can vary depending upon different personality types :
People with a pitta personality, for instance who suffer from hypertension are usually prone to headaches , red eyes and digestive problems.
In the "Kapha" kind of hypertension, we see that people besides having blood pressure, will also be obese and prone to high cholesterol.
In the "Vata" kind of hypertension  we find that blood pressure keeps fluctuating and is connected to stressful situation. These people also have problems sleeping and suffer from gas.
Hypertension in Children
Contrary to popular belief, even the children get hypertension, though this is  not common . Sometimes a wrong diagnosis is made if the blood pressure is measured with a cuff of smaller than normal size. The cuff is wrapped around  the arm of the child to measure the pressure.  Also if the child is excited, the higher pressure must be confirmed by taking a few more readings.
Symptoms
Usually, hypertension is accidentally discovered when the child is  examined for a routine check-up. Of course, it can also present with symptoms typical of disorders of the kidney, heart, central nervous system and endocrine system. Thus the child may have blood in the urine, breathlessness on exertion, visual disturbances, headaches or even a stroke.
"Music heals the heart. Listening to the calming music relieves stress"
Management
  • Confirmation of raised pressure by frequent blood pressure reading in a relaxed atmosphere.
  • Investigations to rule out the cause of hypertension and if proved, treatment prescribed for the same.
  • If the cause is not found, a diagnosis of essential hypertension is made.
  • If the child is overweight, all efforts are made to regulate the child's diet and to see that he takes active part in sports or other forms of exercise.
  • Salt is restricted in the diet. Canned and fast foods are to be avoided as they may have a high amount of salt or fat.
  • If your doctor decides that the child should have long term medication for keeping the blood pressure in check, do follow the advice seriously because high blood pressure, if not treated,  can cause complications with damage to the blood vessels of the eyes, kidney and brain.  It can also lead to heart failour.
"Symptoms do not usually manifest until complications develop. The treatment can be life long.""

Diagnosis

Blood pressure : Resting blood pressure . Regular check up of blood pressure is required because high blood pressure may lead to heart attack. Get your BP checked yearly after age 50

When there is complete isolation from the influx of the senses, the consciousnesses, the mind and the brain  undergo metamorphosis, a complete transformation. It is as if a new  brain, mind and conscientiousness  are been created out of the old brain, mind and consciousnesses. All mental, muscular and emotional tensions are immediately relaxed.

    Nutrition

The main emphasis on avoiding foods that promotes high blood pressure and replacing them with foods  lead to a normalising of blood pressure. Avoid non-vegetarian options, like eggs alcohol and tobacco. Foods that help during an attack of high blood pressure are vegetable juices- both raw and fresh juices containing parsley, celery, spinach carrot and raw potato. These ingredients act at many levels in the circulatory system to decrease blood pressure. Firstly they help to balance the calcium, sodium and potassium levels of the body.

These salts have a key influence in normalizing the flexibility of the blood vessels, which ultimately helps in  the lowering of blood pressure.

Ayurveda, the ancient science, has provided us some natural remedies that may help stabilize blood pressure and keep your heart healthy.  While medications prescribed by the doctor may help, some simple Ayurvedic remedies can be brought to use.

Modern versus Ayurvedic diet for Hypertension
As per modern medicine Salt restriction (no more than 5 grams of sodium chloride or common salt per day) and taking adequate amount of potassium , calcium,  and magnesium are important dietary measures in the case of high blood pressure. Weight reduction is advised to those who are obese. Smoking cessation and alcohol moderation are additional potentially beneficial measures.

    Methi

As per Ayurvedic science, each person has unique constitution (prakruti) which can be analysed by his / her governing doshas (vata, pitta and kapha) Bodily characteristic and mental attitude. Health is characterized by a balance between the three doshas and an illness is caused by a  lack of balance among them. When a balance among them is restored, the person regains the lost health.

    Mausmi

Hence it is essential to know the constitution of a person, before suggesting diet as per Ayurveda.. However in general imbalance of vata dosha is considered most important for increasing blood pressure.

Regularity in diet is very important. Patient should maintain regular schedule of taking meals and snacks. Both overeating and fasting should be avoided. While eating, food should be chewed slowly and adequately. Worries and anger should be avoided at the time of eating. In general , warm and well cooked food is better to balance vata dosha then cold and raw foods. In addition to diet changes, lifestyle changes such as regularity in work schedule and sleep, regular meditation and relaxation activities etc. are also important to pacify vata dosha.

Certain foods such as garlic, coriander, ginger, cardamom, spinach, celery, watermelon, tomato etc. are believed to be helpful in controlling blood pressure. Legumes (e.g.lentils and beans) nuts and whole grains (e.g. unprocessed maize, millet, oats, wheat and brown rice.) can be used. More use of barley (yava), sorghum (jowar),wheat, green gram (mudga/moong dal), horse gram, moringa (shingru or drumsticks), bitter gourd (karela), bottle gourd (ghia/ lauki), turnip (shalgam, carrot (gajar), raddish (muli), Indian goose berry (amla), cucumber (Kheera), black grapes (draksha), pomegranate (anar), apple pineapple, buttermilk etc. also recommend their exact qualities (like dose of medicine). Moderation and one's own insight should be followed.

Excessive intake of salt (sprinkling over salad, curd etc, excessive use of butter, ghee chilies (red-green), pickles, fried food, sour fruits, tea, coffee and alcohol consumption should be avoided. Avoid excessively spicy, sour and salty foods like chilies and papad, garam masala as it elevates body temperature, food with preservatives, like ready-to eat preparations and pickles, bread and flour (maida) products, untimely food habits, excess eating after sunset and refrigerated food items.

Certain Ayurvedic herbs are useful to control blood pressure such as Arjuna (Terminalia arjuna), Sarpagandha (Rauwolfia serpentina), Punarnava (Boerhaavia diffusa), Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), saffron (Crocus sativus), crysanthemum (Chrysanthemum morifolium), amlaki (Emblica officinalis), basil (Ocimum basilicam)etc. Triphala (harad, amla and beheda) and trikatu made with three pungent spices, black pepper, long pepper and ginger can also prove very effective. However they should be ideally consumed only if  suggested by an Ayurvedic expert.

    • Polyunsaturated fats  are found in sunflower oil, fish and almonds; monounsaturated  in peanut oil, peanuts, peanut butter and cashew nuts. And saturated fats come from a milk source (butter, ghee and cheese) egg yolk, coconut oil,, palm oil, meat, chicken and chocolate. The best thing to do is to use a variety of vegetables cooking oils from mustard seed, sunflower, groundnut and safflower among others.Equally important is physical activity, as that too, increases the 'good' cholesterol that protects the heart.
