Three Stages Of Life
 |
Kapha/Pitta/Vata |
According to Ayurveda, different stages of our lives are deeply influenced by each of the three doshas -vata, pitta and kapha. Childhood, which is the first stage, is governed by kapha dosha. The second stage, from puberty up to the age of fifty, is governed by pitta dosha. And the third stage, which is from the age of fifty until death, is governed by vata dosha.
Within the human being different anatomical structures and physiological processes have common
attributes and are closely influenced by each other. Such related structures and functions are grouped into three governing biological elements, leading to psycho-physiological factors, called Doshas.
The doshas which rule everything are Vata, Pitta, Kapha and constitutes the structural and functional units of all the living cells, tissues, organs and the body as a whole.
One unit (cells) each of Vata, Pitta and Kapha is the minimal requirement for the beginning of life in the most primitive form. They originate from the five basic elements e.g. Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Space.
Vataja
The diseases and morbid conditions due to the perturbation of vata assail the body from foot to head. and the majority of them share a predisposition to causing abnormalities of motor function and locomotion in particular. An illustrative list would include foot drop, stiffness in ankle, calf cramps, sciatica, limping, rectal prolapse, penile stiffness, gaseous regurgitation, short stature, stiffness in back, constriction of chest, wasting of arms stiffness of neck, hoarseness of voice, pain and looseness of teeth, stammering, loss of smell and hearing, paralysis of face, one limb, one side of all limbs, convulsions, insomnia and loss of mental balance. In all these and other unlisted conditions.
An expert physician would detect the characteristic signs of disturbed vata. These are roughness, coldness, lightness, non-sliminess movement disorder, non-solidity and instability. As a result of disturbed vata there are changes in functions and farm of target organs. These include dissociation, dislocation, division, fusion, severing, tremors, wasting, movement, pain, roughness, reddish hue, tastelessness, numbness and stiffness. These are amongst the telltale sighs of vata.
The principles of treating vata disorders consist of the administration of sweet, sour and salty fat laced and hot items in diet and medications, lubricant, and non lubricant enema, nasal irrigation, massage and bath after oiling the body. All in appropriate dosage and in conformity with time. Among these measures enema are most important because they enter the colon and strike at the root of vata which causes the wide ranging effects of vata to wither away. This reminiscent of the destruction of the roots which invariably lead to the atrophy of the whole tree including its trunk, branches, leaves, flowers and fruits.
Anorexia Nervosa
The symptoms which are found in this are exactly like aggravation of vata. Body massage and medicated oil and fomentation, medicated enema. Shirodhara with oil and vata pacifying treatment for eating disorders.
IRREGULAR VATA, COLD, DRY
Nervous impulse, Movement
The biological combination of Air and Space gives rise to Vata, the intangible aspects of a person, responsible for motion and animation.
Vata is equated with the wind and governs the central nervous system, controlling even the movements of Pitta and Kapha.
Vata structures and functions usually have qualities like dry, cold, light in weight, irregular, mobile, quick, rough, unstable and subtle. Crooked structures are common because of random movements of the air energies within the spine and nervous system. Respiration, energy vibrations, integrity of the limbs, impulses etc are dependent on Vata.
Inner movements in the form of mental activity, as well as general random body movement generates more kinetic energy. Imagine watching an action movie in which the actors are going through great turmoil. Although you are sitting passively, your nervous system is reacting to the movement on the screen. Elements responds, exited by mental activity and visual and audible stimuli. They produce energy in the system and nervous excitation which may even cause the heart rate to rise. Remaining seated for 2 hours you build up a charge inside you that needs to be dissipated or utilized- whether you have a vata constitution or not. Vatas of course, have a more urgent need to do something and possibly feel drained at the same time.
With more and more movements including subtle ones, more kinetic energy is produced until it almost becomes self generating. At some point this energy has to leave the system or it can adversely affect the nerves and tissues. The cycle of building and dissipating energy is a general pattern. If we struck in building energy and don't 'get it out' , we become prone to nervous twitches., anxiety and even joint problems, because of energy accumulating about the joints. If the energy becomes trapped, it literally requires more energy to hold it into place, frequently resulting in depletion and a deranged vata condition.
Because of light qualities of Vata's predominant elements, balanced vata is light, active, exuberant, joyful and light hearted with a quick mind but it forgets easily. Too much vata tend towards a hyperactive mind which can produce fear and anxiety. Unbalanced vata seems weak, insecure, untrustworthy and can be agitating to be around.
Vata is generally more predominant in the areas below the umbilicus level
The primary site of vata is the colon and the thigh, hips bones, ears, and skin (organ of touch) are its sub sites. Within the digestive system, the primary location of Vata is the colon.
Recommendations :
Anti Vata Therapy for reducing excess air
A nutritive strengthening diet is indicated with predominately sweet (sugar, milk, butter, rice, breads, pasta). sour (yoghurt, lemon, cheese); salty tastes. Food should be oily, warm, heavy and moist. Eat well prepared, favorable, frequent and regular meals, in a quiet pleasant environment, when your hunger is strong.

Dairy products pacify vata.
Fats and oils reduce vata.
Green or yellow mung beans, red lentils are preferrable. The are usually prepared by mixing one part od dried beans with 2 parts of water and boiling to the consistency of soup. Except for these and tofu, reduce the intake of beans, as they reinforce Vat.
Vegetables should be well cooked in ghee or oil and are best taken in soups, casseroles and stews. Almost all vegetables are acceptable with carrots beats, zucchini, asparagus, spinach, tomato and anti choke being most desirable. Raw vegetables should be minimized. Ashwagandha , guggul, haritaki, ginseng.
VATA TRAITS MAY INCLUDE :
- Tall .rangy .lean .dry hair & skin .small eyes .irregular teeth .variable appetite .changeable .poor stamina .light sleeper .fearful .anxious .spacey.
SITES OF VATA
Vata has preferred location in the body : Urinary bladder, colon, waste, joints, feet , bones and intestines, but intestine is its special seat.
An emphasized repeatedly, the balance of doshas is indispensable for good health and the healthy life that goes with it.
Conversely the perturbation of doshas (dosavaisamya) is the principle mechanism for endogenous disease which are innumerable. Of these are eighty, forty and twenty diseases which prominently own their genesis to the disturbance of vata, pitta and kapha respectively.
If space and air dominates awareness you may be with a vata type. A nature of vata is mobility, expansion flexibility may be a hyper metabolic, with an ectomorphic body type. Every thing moves fast, high metabolic rate,, prominent veins, and tendons, bony prominences, dry cool skin, uncomfortable in cold weather. Thin mobile vivacious lively, enthusiastic, friendly and prone to osteo-arthritis.
At the perception of physical and psychological treat, the movement gets anxious, restless, insomnia, heart, palpitations, muscle spasms, menstrual cramps, irritable bowel, (constipation) migraine and headaches' No ides' is a trait of confused vata, A vata imbalance means that there is too much vata. The flow of intelligence is from cool and dry.
Balanced vata is energetic, adaptable, has strong initiative and is good communicator.
Imbalanced vata is restless inconsistence, capricious, and talkative..
Ayurveda has individualistic approach to health.
Ectomorph
- More narrow shoulders and hips in respect to height.
- Relatively smaller muscles in respect to bone length.
- Naturally fast metabolism makes it difficult for many to gain mass.
- Potentially indicative of disordered eating (e.g., anorexia, bulimia) when BMI is ≤17.
Course of Doshas
The status of vata, pitta and kapha is a constant background to disorders of the head, heart and abscesses including those complicating diabetes. Doshas are dynamic entities which are prone to movement in three directions.
1 . In the first place, they may remain normal.
- Or may swing towards diminution
- Or accumulation.
2 . Secondly they may move upwards, downwards or in a oblique direction in the body with corresponding manifestations.
3 . Thirdly, the perturbed doshas may migrate to the gut, vital organs or joints.
At another level, doshas may follow a dual status as normal or abnormal.
In the normal state,
pitta causes digestion
Kapha is responsible for strength.
And vata represent the life breath and sustain every kind of movement in the body.
When the status shifts to abnormal, pitta produces several disorders;
Kapha becomes a execrable impurity and
vata brings about many diseases and may even stop the breath of life.
Lastly doshas respond to the change of seasons, which should recieve the attention of physician. Pitta undergoes aggregation, perturbation and quietude during rains, autumn and early winter. Kapha is concentrated, perturbed and composed in early winter, spring and summer.
Vata tends to accumulate, vitiate and settles down during summer, rains and autumn.
Given so many factors within and without which can always turn hostile, an individual turning for long life should be particular in following a proper code of living.
Attributes manifesting in the body
Dry skin, hair, lip, tongue, dry colon, tending towards constipation, hoarse voice.
Light muscles, bones, thin body frame, light scanty sleep, underweight.
Cold hands, feet poor circulation, hates cold and loves hot, stiffness in the muscles.
Rough, cracked skin, nails, hair, teeth, hands and feet, cracking joints.
Subtle fears, anxiety, insecurity, fine goose bumps, minute muscle twitching, fine tremors, delicate body.
Fast walking, talking, doing many things at a time, restless eyes, eyebrows, hands feet, unstable joints, many dreams, loves travelling but does not stay in one place, mood swings and shaky faith.
Clairvoyant, understands and forgets immediately, clear empty mind, experiences the void and loneliness.
The most unique quality of Vata is its dryness and dryness is an inherent aspect of how we age. Vata All anti (anti-air) therapies are nurturing, warming, moistening calming and grounding. They should be done with patience, peace, consistency and regularly.
THE FIVE SUBTLE FORMS OF VATA
Vata divides itself into five sub-doshas aspects or directional flows, each with its own action and direction
Flow of cellular intelligence
Life Force- Prana Current
Flow of cellular intelligence
Prana is centered in the brain and moves downwards towards lungs and heart. It governs all higher sensory functions : sight, hearing, taste, touch and smell. Prana also governs swallowing, inspiration, the intellect and conciousness. In short Prana brings the energy neccessary for those vital functions down into the body.
Upward Vata Udana Current
Mentation (mental activity) & Neuromuscular activity
Situated in the region of the diaphragm it moves upwards. It governs the expiration of breath, coughing, speech, vomiting, jumping, hopping, hiccupping and all upwards movements, including the movements of the soul out of the body at the time of death. Udana is helpful with memory, as it returns energy to the brain.
Stomach Vata- Samana Current
Digestive movement. Gastro- intestinal motility
Samana is situated in the abdominal region of the small intestine and enables linear movements, such as the side action of the small intestine. Samana also controls secretions of the stomach, peristaltic action in the intestines and other side to side movements.
Downward Vata Apana Current
Apana is situated in the large intestine and moves downward from there into the legs. It governs all the lower downward action, such as defecation, urination, flatulence, expulsion of sexual fluids and the fetus. In short , all the functions of the lower pelvic cavity and legs
Circulation Vata Vyana Current
Vyana is centered in the heart and governs all circular motions, circulation of blood and lymph, circular motions of the joints and the circulation of Prana to create the functions of the heart. To enables you make a circle with your arm, Vyana must be present and functional in your body. Without the downward action of Prana, Vyana will not work
Meanwhile, the vatic or subtler forces gather strength and our investment in this earthly, physical life is gradually withdrawn until the body begins to wither and our minds become progressively spacey and absent until finally we leave.
Because of the property of movement of vata, molecules that were bound together, by kapha, move away from each other and finally dissociate. In addition, air and movement create dryness, which reduces lubrication at each joint, increasing friction, leading to wear and tear and degeneration, which is ageing.

An Assortment of disorders
hel Just as flying bird can never go beyond its shadow even it flies all day, disorders can never outstrip the doshas. Disease are primarily rooted in the imbalance of the tress doshas (endogenous)- the only exception being the exogenous group which has purely external causes (agantuk)It does however happen that exogenous disorders in turn upset the balance of dosas or vice versa
Imbalance of doshas as the basis of disorders
Disease set through 4 mechanisms which are external factors, Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. What they have in common is the morbid nature of their outcome- disease. The very same doshas may cause different disease due to the difference in location, and the symptoms would include those produced by the dosa as well as the location.
The disease due to internal cause are precipitated by the imbalance of vata, pitta and kapha.
Cause
Less food intake in Hemant Ritu
In Hemant (winter), the cold wind retards the release of body heat and enhances the digestive fire, even food heavy in quality and quantity becomes digestible. If adequate food is not available, the digestive fire consumes body rasas and causes vata disturbances that are commonly seen in the cold season.
Sisir Ritu
The onset of sisira heightens libido. When snow falls and winter deepens, exposure to frosty winds should be avoided. Other things to be avoided include light food and drinks that may enhance vata, cold drinks,
TREATMENT
Lubricants differ in qualities action. Among vegetable products sesame oil excels as it provides strength and ameliorates vata.
Oil settles vata disturbances, enhances the strength and suppleness of the skin and has a cleansing effect on the female genital tract.
Castor oil, on other hand is a purgative and an antidote to vata and kapha. disturbances.
Bone Marrow has a positive effect in strength, semen, fat, and kapha. It strengthens the bone.
Muscle fat is useful in treating intestinal perforation, fracture, uterine prolapse, earache, and headache and promotes the virility and strength of those whose level of physical activity is high.
Ghee
Ghee is the foremost because apart, from alleviating pitta and vata, it cools and softens the body improves voice and complexion and enhances the output of semen. It has a special merit of not loosing its qualities while imbibing the qualities of vegetable substances with which it is cooked.
Some qualities attributed to kapha and pitta will help to balance excess vata, such as unctuousness (oiliness), warmth, softness, stability, heaviness and stiffness of the nerves. Here are few examples.:
Coating of the body (do not rub it in) with warm oil (sesame oil is good for vata, because it is slightly heating).
Putting a few drops of warm oil in the nostrils and ears.
Coating the feet and hands, then cover them up and keep them warm while it soaks in.
Drinking boiled milk with some fresh, ground peppercorn and honey will sedate, warm and nourish the system.
Drinking warm liquids, like ginger tea.
Have a hot bath, wrap, wrap it up in a fluffy robe, breath slowly several times through the right nostril, while closing off the left, than meditate deeply.
The optimum heating environment, should be warm, quiet,, comforting, establishing immediately a degree of sedation and safety.
Ayurvedic Herbal Smoking
.jpeg) |
(धूम्रपान ) |
For the "Joie de vivre" medicated smoke should become a part of the daily routine. This is far from easy as it involves grinding parts of 32 plants such as Chandana, guggulu, kesar, cardemum, harenuka and many more and applying the paste on a thumb like reed, eight fingers long. When dried, the medicated cylinder should be put in the smoking pipe, lit with a little fat and enjoyed.
This is known as Dhumrapana or Ayurvedic herbal smoking. According to Ayurveda, a person who desires to take care of their health should inhale herbal smoke daily to treat or to prevent the onset of diseases, especially for the parts above the shoulders, due to increase of Kapha and Vata.
The composition of plants will vary when smoking is employed as therapy for various illness of the head and neck such as heaviness, pain in ear and eyes, hiccups, discharge from ear, eye and nose, toothache, spasm of the jaw and neck, voice disorders hair loss and so on. Illness of the head and neck (above the collar bone) are prevented by medicated smoke which is appropriate after bath, meals, vomiting, sneezing brushing teeth, snuffing, application of collyrium and sleep. Each time three puffs should be taken which will vary in frequency depending on weather it is for daily use or for evacuation therapy. When properly used, smoking cleanses the chest throat and sense organs besides lightening the head and controlling the dosas of vata and kapha which dominate the regions of the head, neck and chest. In excess, smoking can cause deafness, blindness, dizziness and internal bleeding.
 |
Dhumrapaan Instrument |
These complications should be recognized and treated promptly. Smoking is forbidden after purgation and blood letting., in pregnancy, emanciation, fatigue, diabetes, alcoholism, poisoning and injury and after taking wine, milk, honey,, fatty substances and food with curd,
While smoking one should comfortably with the body and eyes straight and the mind focused, and inhale thrice through our nostril, while closing the other.. Three such rounds are recommended. In routine smoking, the pipe should be 36 fingers long, while for head evacuation and lubrication the length should be 24 and 32 fingers. The pipe should be straight with three pouches and a tip sized like a jujube stone.
Smoking in this manner from a distance, broken by joints and reduced through a pipe does not harm a senses. When used as therapy, the smoke is inhaled through nose for head and neck diseases and through the mouth for throat disorders. when smoking through the nostrils. the smoke should be exhaled through the mouth. Exhaling through the nostril after inhaling smoke through the mouth is harmful to the eyes and is not advised.
