Pour warm water over it . Let the wet gauze remain in place for about 15 minutes. Then remove the wet pieces, and dress with a dry gauze and bandage). This may be needed for few days. When the head of the boil opens and start discharging pus, continue the hot compress till all the pus comes out.
As with acne, do not squeeze the boil to take out the pus. Let it come out on its own with the help of moist heat.. If we do not notice any relief within 3 to 4 days, consult a doctor. . At times the pus need to be drained out with the help of a cut. The doctor may have to dress the wound and prescribe some antibiotic to be taken orally.

They must be differentiated from the normal white coating of the tongue and whiteness of gums,or a white pinpoint spot on the palate (roof of the mouth) in new born babies.
Thrush can also be seen with a red diaper rash that persist despite treatment. A breastfeeding mother can also get it on her nipples which can become quite sore. The fungus is the same in all these cases.
Source of infection : If the mother has vaginal thrush, the newborn baby can develop in it in his mouth during birth. Prolonged use of antibiotics can also be responsible. Patients with AIDS also get such infections off and on.

Cellulitis cannot always be prevented, but the risk of developing cellulitis can be minimised by avoiding injury to the skin, maintaining good hygiene and by managing skin conditions like tinea and eczema. A common cause of infection to the skin is via the fingernails.

Diaper Rash (Nappy Rash)
This rash is commonly seen in new born babies and in older infants with frequent loose motions. It is seen less commonly in breastfed babies.
Typically, we neglect to change the diaper soon after it is wet or soiled, and the prolonged contact with urine or stools may lead to redness over the lower part of the abdomen, genital area and the buttocks. some times the moisture in the area can attract a fungus.
To prevent diaper rash, always use cotton diapers. How ever it is found that quality available of disposable diapers have improved. This is causing less incidence of diaper rash. Try to change the diaper as soon as it is wet. Clean the soiled diaper area with plain water and dry it. Make sure that no moisture is left in the groin or in the creases of skin.
Some babies get up if the diaper is changed during the night, but they do not get the rash even if the diaper is not changed.
If your baby develops diaper rash, expose the skin to air as often as possible, especially for some times after he has passed urine and / or stool. This is often enough to solve the problem. If the rash persist , a preparation containing zinc and castor oil may be used for local application.Your chemist can make it or any ready made preparation can be used 3 times a day.Take a baby to the doctor if the rash persist. He may have to treat it with anti-fungal preparation.
In severe diaper rash do not excessively clean or wipe the affected area.. Washing with plain water, followed by cool compresses of a mixture of half milk and half water, then an application of a zinc cream over a light application of mild steroid and anti-fungal cream seems to work best. Eczema in children
Symptoms
If a 2 or 3 months old baby develops red patches of itchy dry skin on his face , forehead and the back of the ears, he is probably heading for an allergic skin condition called eczema. Itching makes the rash worse and the skin starts oozing. As the secretion dries up , scaly patches may be noticed.. If the broken down skin becomes infected, pus like discharge is observed and the child may develop fever.
In older children , eczema presents as itchy, dry skin. The front of the elbows and the back of the knees are more commonly affected.
Eczema is more commonly in babies given artificial milk. Babies exclusively breastfed for the first 6 months of life are less prone to it. In the families with a strong history of allergy, exclusive breastfeeding is therefore advisable for 6 months. An older infant may get this allergy with an egg, milk, peanut or a wheat preparation.
Another similar condition termed a contact dermatitis may develop because of contact with an irritating substance like woolen clothing, certain soaps or oils, besan (gram flour paste) , a bubble bath, disposable diapers or certain plants.
Treatment
The treatment of eczema remains more or less symptomatic. The principles are to keep the skin moist, minimize itching , and to try to find the possible allergen. Avoid frequent washing of the skin (specially with soap), it is likely to dry it more. Linseed oil may be applied over the itchy patch. Apply an ointment(i.g. emulsificans aquosum, BP), available from the chemist., instead of soap. Pat the skin dry with a soft towel and do not rub. Avoid application of besan (gram flour) paste on the skin. Some children may also get a rash from using certain expensive soaps (including baby soap) and oils. Application of milk creams may also cause rash.
Keep the child's nails short. Do not use mittens (as hard gloves) at night unless the itching is severe. If you must use them , check inside the mittens that they are smooth and do not have any loose threads that may get entangled with the child's fingers.
The doctor may prescribe oral anti-histamine drug like chlorphenaramine. Cold compress on the rash may be found to be soothing. Soothing ointments containing corticosteroids should be used only in consultation with a doctor, since they are absorbed into the body through the skin and may cause side effects . If applied, they should be used in a very small amounts. If the skin gets infected , the doctor may prescribe antibiotic. In a very severe cases , cyclosporine, a potentially toxic drug, has been found to be helpful.
A mother who is breastfeeding may try avoiding possible allergens(food) from her diet.
If you need to be on a prolonged milk free diet, consider taking some calcium preparations and vitamin B 12. A diet that includes fruits, vegetables and sprouts is essential.
Some babies who are allergic to cow milk may tolerate soya milk better, though some children are also allergic to soya milk. Premature babies may not have satisfactory weight gain with soya milk . Some people are also showing concern about the presence of high levels of aluminium and phytoestrogen in soya milk preparations. , though no definite adverse effects have been substantiated because of presence of these two.

Some of these are due to fungal infections that can be treated easily with local applications.
An early diagnosis of leprosy makes all the difference to its treatment. That is why our discussion her is limited. to the diagnosis of an early case, with loss of sensation over the affected part.
If you see a high colored patch on the skin that looks different from the surrounding area, and there is a loss of sensation., see a doctor.
Patch of leprosy should be differentiated from ringworm and vitiligo.. A very common type of white spot is noticed in children who play a lot in the sun, mostly on the cheeks of the children with darker skin, but also elsewhere on the body. They tend to come and go, and disappears after a couple of months. No treatment are of any help. Some believe that such white spots may be associated with worms, there is no harm in giving your child treatment for the same. Incidentally, it may be mentioned that such patches (and also white lines on the nails) are not due to calcium or other deficiencies.
