Introduction

‘Rasayana’ is a compound word made up of two words Rasa : ‘ nutrition’, ‘nourishment’, the first tissue among seven tissues. Ayanam:  ’bringing’, ‘channels’ ‘ ‘circulating’. Rasayana means ‘ giving adequate nourishment to inter cellular fluid or plasma (rasa) and other 6 tissues of living organism.

  • Enzymes, Vitamin C, Vitamin E,  and beta carotene,  (which is converted into vitamin A) that are capable of counteracting the damaging effect of oxidation.

  • Rasayana drug act as Immuno-modulators by promoting bodily defense mechanisms such as increasing the WBC Count, improving immune functions. Bodily defense mechanism is promoted. 2 . Method of Use
1 . An Indore Regimen hospital based (Kuti Praveshika Rasayana) a therapy which involves subject living in a specially designed cottage, for receiving . This procedure requires construction of special dwellings, where in the patient needs to stay during the course of Rasayana administration. The diet and regimen indicated during KPR are comparatively complex. Because of it, it is seldom practice.

2 . An outdoor Regimen. (Vatatapika Rasayana) therapy is less stringent procedure where people can practice Rasayana therapy in their routine.  The patient can continue daily activities while undergoing VRR. Because of ease to follow, this procedure is practiced commonly.


3 . Good Conduct or Non drug Rasayana Aacharya Rasayana (Sadvritta) Balanced conduct. Special health promoting conduct and behavior. A good conduct (Sadvritta) towards self and society awards us good health and control over the senses and desires.Truthfulness, freedom from anger, self control over senses, tranquility, and adherence to a good code of conduct. Mode of action of Rasayana drugs at three levels

1 Direct nutrition effect (Dhatu poshana)

Some Rasayana drugs / foods are excellent in essential nutritional factors. They especially act directly on inter cellular fluid or Rasa dhatu (first tissue), enrich it and successive tissues or (dhatus). For example, Vidari (Peuraria tuberosa, Indian kudzu,  Amalki ( Emblica officinalis), Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) and Shatavari (Asparagus recemose).


2 Normalizing digestion and metabolism (Agni vyapana)

Term ‘ Agni’ generally means ‘fire’ however in the context of human body (Shaarira) (anatomy and physiology) it has a unique understanding. Any activity of breaking down food ingredients  and formation of body components tissues and excretory products (Dhatus and malas) is done by Digestive fire (JathraAgni).


3 Cleaning channels / enhancing micro circulation (Srotro Shodhana)

Srothas means a channel’s or pathway. It may be a channel required for the flow of physical matter or certain nerves conducting impulses or some pathways. As long as channels or srothas are normal, the body is less likely inflicted disorders. There are 13 such pathways or channels for maintenance of physiology. Certain drugs clear the blockage or obstructed in channels / pathways. Drug like Vidanga (Embelia robes), false black pepper, Pippali (Piper longum, long pepper) and honey essentially have this action.

Green Gram

The key concept of nutrition is the process referred to as Rejuvenation / or Rasayana रसायन Nutrition in its wholesome sense only happens when the numerous pathways / channels or ayaanas’ such as those associated with the performing vital functions of conducting food, air, water, nutrients to various tissues (dhatus) and also in excreting waste ( mala) of the body are open and unclogged. Another word for channels in Sanskrit is ‘shrotas’ (pathways) and these are described as means of transportation of physical matter like blood or conduction of signals like nerve stimuli.


Clearing of blocked channels (Srotoshudhi) caused due to physical  for e.g. tumors or physiological conditions in the body. Open channels result in proper metabolism, bio assimilation, proper excretion and hence nutrition. Clogging of channels leads to aging and ill health. The process of opening clogged channels is called ‘Sroto Shodhan’. However the theory of ‘Rasayana’ is very critical for nutrition.


The seven tissues in the human body (Dhatus) that form subsequently as product of metabolism. The regular and optimum nourishment of there tissue can lead to healthy and long life. Rasayana is one  of the eight branches of Ayurveda which suggest methods for improving the transformation and efficiency of conduction of nutrients (rasa) to all tissues dhatus. through dedicated pathways (aayana) 


The literal meaning of ‘Rasa’ is the essence of something. Anything ingested into the body in the form of food or medicine is first re synthesized into (plasma / Nutritive fluid / inter cellular fluid) or Rasa Dhatu. If the development of Rasa tissue is disturbed, it leads to a chain reaction of malfunction of the development of all the other body tissues viz; rakta ( blood), Mamsa ( muscle), Medha ( fat tissue), asthi ( bones), Shukra ( reproductive fluid) and Majra ( mattow). The process of biochemical metamorphosis of plasma / rasa into other body tissues is called assimilation / or metabolic process / Rasakriya.


The prime function of Rejuvenator / Rasayana is to enhance the efficiency of the metabolic processes / rasakriya and thus revitalize the body tissue (dhatus) via different modes of action.

Medicated Paste (Lehyams) and Food Supplements

Lehman is medicated paste.Lehyams and Rasayanam or food supplements are herbally infused jams known for their rejuvenative properties. Different forms like powder (churana) ), ghee based (lehyam, ghritam) and juice (sharada) etc. Decoction  with gooseberry will have palliative effect on the disease but will not act as Rasayana. It gives the effect of Rasayana only when prepared and administered according to the prescribed method.


Semi-solid Medicated paste / or Lehyam Preparation

The major components in making lehyam are:

  • Juice : A liquid part- kshayam, कषाय, etc.

  • Ghee, oil or honey (according to formula)

  • Media- Jaggery or sugar.

  • Medicine in the form of powder or ground paste.

Making lehyam starts with dissolving the sugar media in the liquid part and concentrating it on a low temperature until it becomes a stage called Syrup or ‘paka’ (when the concentrated  semi- liquid will shows thread like when pressed between two fingers and released). This is then added with the fine powder, ghee and oil.Good mixing is essential  to get the semi solid form. Honey is added to the second mixture, it is properly mixed to get the appropriate semi- solid form. Lehyam, avaleha, Prasad, and Ghulam are the very familiar forms off medicines processed with sugar media. Chyawanprash are example.


Decoction Good for health : Leaves of Neem, Tulsi and bel boiled in water . Drink in the morning for 21 days.

How can we make decoction of Neem leaves?

1: Making large amounts of a watery neem leaf extract.

1 . Cover the Neem leaves with water at a ratio of one kilogram of leaves to five liters of water.

2 . Let the leaves soak over night.

3 . Don't heat or boil the mix. ...

4 . The next day grind the leaves in the water, and then strain the mixture.

Arni ( Centella asiatica) Part used whole plant, preferably fresh. Consumption of 10 ml ( 5 ml for children) of Brahmi / Mandukaparni juice with a little honey and ghee early morning on empty stomach promotes intellect and memory; relieves stress. It is a Medhya Rasayana ,a revitalising herb that strengthens nervous functions, memory and intellect. Brahmi leaves can be used in cooking, such as in curries or chutneys. This can be given to children as it is good for memory and intelligence. Brahmi helps to increase intellect and memory. Mandukaparni Centella asiatica is known as Indian pennywort. ( Bael murabba) bel fruit which is known for its coolant effects.  Eating bel murabba in the morning on empty stomach provides great relief from morning sickness during pregnancy.  Bel has digestive and carminative properties which help to strengthen the digestive system and regulates bowel movement. Ghee is considered to be the best  detoxifying agent in the Panchkarma method of Ayurveda. Ghee is widely used in medicinal formulations due to  its unusual ability to assimilate  the properties of herbs it is mixed with , without  giving up its own qualities.Ghee
(ghrita) increased memory power clarity of voice and boosts body energy. It rejuvenated skin and enhances glow of skin. This also helps to  increase quality and quantity of semen. Usage of old ghee is said to be more beneficial. In weakness recommends the use of ghee. It is a Rasayana and promotes overall well being, youthfulness and longevity. Modern research has also approved it is an antioxidant and container of beta carotene. One should advocate the practice of a judicial intake of ghee which is actually meant to protect the body. Thus if the right quantity of ghee is taken and it is digested properly it keeps the digestive fire burning to enable the remaining food to be digested easily and without causing any trouble. However if ghee is ingested in inappropriate quantities, and without consideration of digestive capacity, age, time of the year time of the day etc. then it can lead to associated problems.


The characteristic properties of  ghee are its capability to enhance memory, digestion, strength, longevity and quality of semen. It is also good for eyes. Its therapeutic qualities are used in conditions like wasting, fatigue, skin diseases, spread of toxins and poisons within the body, mental imbalances and certain types of fever. It is superior most among all the uncting agents (others being animal fat and oil from different sources.)The qualities of ghee get better the longer it is kept.

Respiratory disorders

Licorice or Mulethi or



A piece of licorice is given to anyone with a sore throat. It is considered one of the best remedies for sore throats and its root has expectorant and laxative properties.Good for respiratory and digestive disorders. It is considered an anti stress and anabolic agent and is most prescribed drug after ginseng. Licorice is a good source of calcium, glucose and iron.  It rejuvenated the brain by increasing the circulation of blood in the central nervous system, balances the sugar level in the body and relieves respiratory ailments like allergies, bronchitis, cold, tuberculosis. It acts as an effective cure for stomach problems, including inflammatory disorders,skin diseases and liver problems. 

  • A decoction of licorice or its powder is prescribed with honey in anaemia.

  • Licorice powder (1 tsp) mixed with cow’s milk (1 cup)  is prescribed for promoting lactation.

  • A confection of rice- milk prepared with licorice powder, is prescribed in hoarseness of voice.

  • 10 g of licorice powder mixed with honey, followed by intake of milk, as an aphrodisiac and as an intellect promoting tonic.

  • A paste of licorice and kutki (Picrorhiza kurroa) with sugar water as a cardiac tonic.

  • A paste of licorice 10 g  in intrinsic hemorrhage.

  • In oedema The paste of licorice, sesamum indicum (til) and milk mixed with ghee is prescribed 

  • Ghee mixed with licorice, is applied topically on wounds, bruises and burns.

  •  A decoction of root is a good wash for falling and graying hairs.

  • Saunthi, marica And Pippali are collectively known as Trikatu.

  • Trikatu is indicated in obesity, indigestion, cough and dyspnea, filariasis and coryza.


Trijataka;

  • Cinnamum,tej patta and elaichi.

  • Twak (cinemomum zeylanicum) , patra (Cinemomum tamula and ela (Elattaria cardemomum) are together called trijataka.

  • Trijata along with Nagkesar (Mesua ferrea) is known as chaturjata.

  • They are having tiksna, ruksa guna,and usna virya and agrevate pitta, increases the perception of taste as well as digestive power.

A confection of rose petals and sugar is employed as mild laxative for children and as cooling agent, which subdues the  vitiation of pitta Dosha.

4 leaves of tulsi and 2 grains of black pepper to be chewed daily once early in the morning, this helps to improve immunity.



Shatavari



Shatavari Asparagus racemosus best known as a female rejuvenative. It is useful for infertility, decrease libido, threatened miscarriages, menopause, and leucorrhea. It promotes lactation in lactating mothers. Shatavari act as a dietary adjuvant and thus increase the strength of tissues. Shatavari keeps the blood vessels young and thus ensures good circulation.



Ashwagandha ( Withania somnifera)

Usage of fresh ginger in cooking daily enhances digestion. Ginger candy : Ginger : 100 grams, sugar 100 grams. Cut ginger into thin round pieces add ½ cup of water and bring to boil. Boil and keep in simmer for 30-40 minutes. Remove from fire when it is well cooked. Remove half of water (you can make ginger tea with this excess water). Keep half of water in cooked ginger. Now add sugar to it , cook this mixture. Stir continuously till the water gets dried up. Do not let the mixture to stick on the plan. Stir well and make the  ginger well dried (without water). Ginger candy is ready.

(Ginger based confection /  toffee) is one such preparation, which is made of ginger, sugar, salt and lemon and is used as an aid to digestion.


Tamarind Candy Imli goli

1 cup thick imli pulp, 11/2 cup Jaggery, 1 tbsp Dry saunth ,½ cup granulated sugar for coating, wrapping paper to wrap and store. Heat the tamarind pulp in a non stick pan on medium flame, stirring continuously till it starts thickening. Now add the Jaggery and keep stirring. Simmer till the mixture thickens. Now add the saunth, mix well and remove from flame and let it cool at room temperature. Then make small balls ( golis) and fool them into the sugar and wrap in transparent wrapping paper and store. This is good for digestion.

  • Daily intake of one Amla is considered a good form of Rasayana. Mother of all herbs. it contributes to Vayasthapana or anti- ageing. It is also vrsya - aphrodisiac. Amalki decreases the catabolism and thus postpone ageing.
  • Daily consumption of 1-2 Amla fruits, murabba / dry crescents / chutneys, retain vitality, youthfulness, enhances immunity and increases longevity. It also helps to control anemia and diabetes. The best Rejuvenator. Amalaki is peerless (अ द्वितीय) among rejuvenative herbs.  Amla (अम्ल) literally means sour. Amla‘ s another name is ‘Dhatri) which means mother. It’s a called maha rasayana in  Ayurveda. Amla good for Throat eyes and heart. Relieves thirst and fever.
  • Excellent source of vitamin C. 720 milligram of ascorbic acid for every 100 grams. The vit C  in Amla is not easily destroyed by heat or light and is more easily assimilated by the body then synthetic vit C.

Part used Mature stem and leaves.It promotes strength.Consumption of 15 ml of Guduchi stem / leaf juice or decoction every morning with honey rejuvenated and controls diabetes; helps to palliate chronic arthritis pain. Guduchi is known remedy for fevers. It promotes strength.It is amahara -eliminates metabolic waste and toxins.

Giloy stem with leaves can be crushed and juice can be extracted 2 tsp  mixed with honey and consumed in conditions like fever, cold and cough.It known as ‘ Vyavasthapak Rasayana’ (adaptogenic tonic)  is known to be a rich source of trace elements (zinc and copper) which act as antioxidants, it is beneficial in chronic fever, tuberculosis, General debility, sexual debility and splenic disorders. Guduchi decreases the catabolism and thus postpone ageing.

Ghee and honey mixed with small quantity of swarn bhasma (ashes of gold) is known to improve intellect of the vacha (Acorus calamus): intellect promoter child.
