Salt

                                 Salt

How much salt is too much?

In last few decades, salt intake amongst people has increased manyfold. Salt is essential to maintain the water and electrolyte balance in humans, but like all food ingredients, it needs to be consumed  in the right quantity.

An estimated 2.5 million annual deaths could be prevented if global salt consumption were reduced to the right level.

Introduction
3.8g of salt daily for adults is recommended. Children less then one year  of age should not be given salt.

High intake of sodium is the largest attributer to mortality.

High salt intake is linked to  increased inflammation, oxidative stress, high blood pressure, damage to the arteries, improper functioning of kidneys, decrease bone mineral density and stroke or dementia.
There is a 17% increase in  cardiovascular events for every 1,000mg/day increase in sodium intake.

Not only the amount of salt  but the ratio of salt to energy  intake also makes a difference in  how it will impact a person's body.

Now a days use of salt has exceeded all reasonable bounds. Use minimum salt per day in vegetables, soups and curries altogether. But now salt is added even to chapatis and rice, butter milk, salads and all bounds of  good sense are crossed. Now salt is sprinkled on fruits. Even peanuts, almonds, pistachios are salted.

Excessive salt causes immeasurable damage to the heart, kidneys and it snatches calcium too.

Salt is a cause of headache, insomnia, sinuses, epilepsy, rheumatoid arthritis and even cancer.

So it is essential that one must cut down salt intake to maintain a balance health.
