Yoga And Health
Yoga And Health
Yoga is an ancient cultural heritage of India. It is a great contribution to the world community in the venture of cultivating humanity at its best.
Benefits of Yoga are : Better mental focus, greater flexibility, decreased stress, enhanced brain functions. Improved respiration, energy and vitality.
The term yoga is derived from the Sanskrit ROOT 'Yoji' to unite the human consciousness with the divine consciousness. Maharshi Patanjali's name is identified with yoga as he gathered together and codified the principles that were scattered in many philosophical texts.
'Yoga Sutra' of Patanjali dates back to around 300 B.C. It is an integrated system as it addresses to both man',gross body and subtle body on physical, mental and intellectual levels.
Yoga has universal application, can be tried by any adult follower of any religion or region.
Introduction
Yoga will purify your body and mind, 'the best of the treatment'.
Yoga is not a religious practice. It is the practice for health and happiness to be done religiously. Yoga is a way of life, a state to be practiced every moment. It is not something we practice only one particular time of the day. It is not merely Asanas. And it should be practiced more as prevention than just as a cure.. 80 % of our diseases are psychosomatic because of our wrong lifestyle and the way of thinking.. Hence one should start yoga from childhood.Through Yoga practice - one progresses from darkness to light, weakness to strength, divesity to unity and ignorance to enlightenment.. Yoga is a message of peace.
Aspect of Adishesha :
The name Patanjali is derived from Pata + Anjali viz dropped into the palm. Gonika a tapaswini prayed to lord Vishnu for a son. She was blessed with a child who was an 'Amsa' - part aspect of Adishesha. As she was praying with her palms turned outwards in the gesture of asking a child. A child dropped into her palms and she named him Patanjali'.
There are particularly four streams of Yoga :
- Janana Yoga : Gaining knowledge by contemplation.
- Raja Yoga : Psychic control and culturing the mind.
- Karma Yoga : Incentive oriented work.
- Bhakti Yoga : Culturing of emotions.
Patanjali focus is on Raja Yoga - the development of the mind, so that it is able to attain the ultimate state of super consciousness. Raja Yoga deals with the control of mind and exploring the enormous reservoirs of each persons consciousness.
The various levels of minds are analysed from the simplest levels of instinct, going on to reason, the intellectual thought, to super consciousness, and ultimately to the perception of the divine power.
Raja Yoga starts with exercises to maintain a body and mind of radiant health and then goes on to indicate how one can explore the potential for great mental powers in all human beings.
Therefore Yoga is not just a set of asanas, it requires one to follow a disciplined lifestyle and that means to forego indulgence in sensual pleasures and creature comforts as well as assiduous cultivation of mental awareness.
Yoga means : The control of thought waves in the mind i.e .chitta.
Chitta, the mind is made up of three components Viz Manas, Buddhi and Ahamkar.
The Manas is the modification of impressions Gathered by the senses from the external world.
The Buddhi is the modifications of this impressions and the reaction to them.
The Ahamkar (ego) is the modification of inner sense which claims these impression as its own and stores them up as individual knowledge.
The mind has five states :
- Kshipta : Chitta which is disturbed and remains running after worldly objects.
- Moodha : There is a preponderance of the Tamas overpowered by dullness and sleep.
- Vikshipta : The chitta oscillates between the successes and failures created by the Rajas Guna.
- Ekagraha : Chitta fixes on one subject due to preponderance of Sattva Guna. Lord Krishna in Bhagwad Gita has said that concentrated mind is like a lamp places in a windless spot which does not flicker. He further says that Yogi is like a lamp seeing self by the self.
- Nirudha : Only Sanskaras in chitta after the cessation (hostilities) of the modifications of the chitta lead to Sattva over Rajas and Tamas in the form of enlightenment.
AVIDHYA : Ignorance, breed false Knowledge.
ASMITA : Ego
RAAG : Seeking pleasures.
DWESHA : Anger and Hatred.
ABHINIVESHA : Fear of Death.
To get rid of these kleshas the mind - or the chitta has to be controlled, cultured and concentrated. Hence eight fold path to get rid over kleshas
Ashtanga Yoga
The 'eight fold path' of Classic Yoga. It is divided into three heads they are :
- Adhikara Yoga : The yogic way of life made up of Yamas and Niyamas.
- Bahiranga Yoga : The external Yogic practice made up of Asanas, Pranayama and Pratyahar
- Antaranga Yoga :The internal yogic practice made up of Dharana, Dhyana and Samadhi.
These cover all aspect of human life. They lead to ethical foundation, physical well being mental harmony and spiritual consciousness.
- Yama - Self restraint.
- Niyama - Ethical observances
- Asana - Physical postures.
- Pranayama - Disciplining the breath.
- Dharana - Concentration.

Non Violence :
Non violence is the greatest virtue. The Mahabharata says - the essence of virtue lies in doing good to others and the essence of sin lies in injuring others.
Violence expresses through physical killing of life specially human.
- Any effort to hurt or injure others through speech is called Vachik Hinsa.
- Any effort to hurt or injure other physically is Kayik Hinsa.
- Any effort to hurt or injure others sentiments and feelings, subtler form of violence is mental is Mansik Hinsa.
Violence is perpetuated due to lack of understanding of universal harmony, reliance on egoistic life, increasing passion and attachment. Lack of control over the mind and senses. In competition all six enemies arise and one becomes prey and indulgences in violence to win over material pleasure.
Hatred, pleasure, greed, pride, vanity, passion, anger, infatuation are the few negative sentiments have to be mastered and overcome, endurance, spiritual strength, understanding, love for all have to be practiced. Violence can't eradicate violence.. An eye for an eye will make the whole world blind.
With Yoga Sadhana, physical body is to be rendered healthy, so in turn it holds healthy emotions.. Yoga can build a symmetrical relaxed body and a strong body holds strong mind and vice versa.
Positive thinking - When a wrong mentation obstruct one should take recourse to contrary process of thought 'Pratipaksha Bhavana' Detach a rising sentiment of irritability. Think of contrary though process, love, understanding, forgiveness are the contrary thoughts and gain strength by positive quality. This way one can save himself and the world around for betterment. Forest are consumed in a blazing fire, so the spark in the beginning is to be extinguished. Yoga develop spiritual advancement with tolerance, endurance, understanding and regard for other welfare hence peace can be achieved.

Mentally sustaining truthfulness is being truthful in every thought, word and deed.Speech when the mind is truthful every word that is spoken is meant to promote truth.
Action
The act of promoting truth is a process promoting harmony. Truth and love go together. They live in an atmosphere of peace and spiritual strength.. If you perfect this truth- the Satya- the Siddhi or attainment is that what ever you say will happen., will come true.. In ancient cultures keeping one's word was a mark of honor. Men and women were known to die to keep their words. It is thought to be something essential for integrity of character.

A mind filled with desires weaken the will and frivolous senses are the basis of stealing, lead to swindling and crimes. This continues to exist in different forms in many people until this tendency of yoga insight eliminates it. People even do not maintain punctuality and rob others time.

He develops a magnetic personality. Mind is balanced in pain and pressure.. Intelligence is clear and serene, even in baffling situations of life and alternating conditions of joy or sorrow. He is transmuted into divine sentiments of spiritual love. Fearlessness, non violence, courage and bliss, Kama, Krodha, Lobha the three vices act because of lack of Brahmacharya.
The sublimation of creative energy can be acquired through Asanas, Bandhas, Mudras, Kriyas and Pranayama.
Success in Brahmacharya is directly related to a successful adherence to all great qualities of head and heart. They cause divine luster in the body.

Dharana
Dharana is a fixing of a mental being on to, or an object. Dharana is concentration. Concentration is a primary step of Raja Yoga for inner illumination. Its next advanced stage is meditation. Concentration means one pointedness of the mind according to one's will. By acquiring this power the individual becomes master of its own mind and controls its fluctuations. The involvement of the mind becomes selective and for some desirable purpose.
It is strongly held in Yoga that unless distraction of the mind is controlled and its energy is properly channeled towards the desired purpose nothing worth is accomplished. Gazing at the burning candle or a flower in the pot for 15 rounds of 10 seconds may develop concentration. When closing eyes if we see the object of concentration through our inner eyes, we have attained concentration. With concentration practice, mental disorders are cured
Dharana helps perceive through the intellect. The self hidden in all beings does not shine forth, but it is perceived through the one pointedness and subtle intellect. Thus the act of detaching the mind from worldly objects and focusing on subtle subjects of soul and supreme soul is Dharana.
Dhyana
Dhyana is meditation. The concentrated flow of superior knowledge is called Dhyana.. Meditation is uninterrupted thinking of one thought. Meditation is a part of Yoga . Yoga is disuniting the mind from all disturbing influences. Concentration of mind is an essential step of meditation. If mind is compared to a lake than concentration takes away the ripples from the lake of mind and its surface becomes smooth. Concentration should be on positive thoughts should hold one's body and keep away detrimental thoughts like violent emotions, anger, hatred and worries etc. Concentration brings self control which is so intimately requisite for an ascending tread of meditation.
The challenge facing every meditator is the threat of mind. Mind is always over powered by instincts one has to get over and lead it in the divine channel, therefore the knowledge of the strategies of the mind control of oneself by which mind can be held back to the point of concentration becomes absolutely essential.
Mind can be made a search light of infinite power. There is no limit to its scope.
If the object of meditation is god then think of God alone. No other thought should enter the mind while meditating. Once this concentration is achieved hold it unwaveringly without medication even for few seconds. This constitutes Dhyana.
Practice this daily and keep extending the period of concentration and meditation. A longer period of three minutes or more will take one in a state of Samadhi which enable one to forget oneself.
