ACID ATTACK
Hyper-acidity and Gastritis are the modern day disorders occurring due to life style errors, faulty eating habits, stress and anxiety.
Acidity can strike anytime, making you feel uncomfortable with all that gas in the stomach and heart burn. The reasons for this might be many, with the most common being long gap between meals, having too much of spicy food and tea/coffee regularly. So while the wrong food can trigger this problem, there are certain foods, easily available in the kitchen which help you get rid of acidity instantly.
IS ACID REFLUX TROUBLING YOU?
Do you tend to bling eat mindlessly and than end up feeling nauseated? If so it may be because you are struggling with acid reflux, which is commonly known as acidity. Almost all of us experience some degree of heartburn or acidity from time to time. But frequent burning, bitter taste in throat, gassy bloating in the stomach points towards acid reflux.
This is often caused by foods which are excessively sour, oily, salty, spicy and sweet, irregular eating habits, lack of exercise and erratic sleep patterns can all lead to gastric issues.
Leading sedentary lifestyle in a big city can make us vulnerable to frequent bouts of acidity and gas. At certain times when the acid and gas get severe, people experience pain, bloating and tightness of stomach. Some might complain of nagging headaches too. Becoming aware of causes of acidity and taking simple preventive steps can help us overcome the condition through natural means.
Hyper acidity refers to a set of symptoms caused by an imbalance between the acid secreting mechanism of the stomach and proximal intestine and the protective mechanisms that ensure their safety. The stomach normally secretes acid that is essential in the digestive process.Hyper acidity, also known as gastritis or Acid Re flux, is the inflammation of the stomach's lining that is usually caused by bacterial infection or other lifestyle habits like alcohol consumption.
Hyper acidity is aggravated ( पित्त प्रकोप ) in autumn season or Sharada Ritu . Hyper acidity is a clear sign of impaired digestive process. what you have to do is to improve you digestion and do the clearing of your intestine.

"Sugar increases acidity"
Introduction
In the season of festivity, get togethers and celebrations, which also means eating and drinking a whole lot! But you've go to think about your poor stomach. Bloating, gas and acidity issues become rampart with the amount of foods and the kinds of food we eat during the festive season. Excess gastric acid production lead to acidity in our stomach, which can further lead to burning sensations in our chest or tummy. Moderate amount of acid release in our stomach help to speed up the digestion of consumed food. But as we know, an excess of anything is bad. That's why excessasive acid in our stomach can lead to a lot of unwanted symptoms and discomfort.
"Hara bachi bu", a Japanese term meaning "eat until you're 80% full.
What is Acidity?
Acidity is a form of indigestion in which there is accumulation of acid leading to burning sensation in stomach and the digestive track. The stomach periodically produces acid to aid digestion. It is when we don't eat at regular intervals or are excessively stressed the stomach produces more acids which harms our body.
Our acidity is measured by our pH levels which ranges from 0 to 14, the lower the pH level the more acidic your body feels. At 7 pH is the neutral level of. While it is always better to keep your body slightly alkaline at the pH of 7.35 to 7.45 . When your body is alkaline you will always feel better. Its like a high and you only realize this when you shift from acidic to alkaline. This has to be done all day as the body's pH level keep shifting. Fortunately kidneys control most of the pH levels.
But still I highly recommend stay alkaline as it has numerous health benefits.Remember that acids are released from the stomach every 3-4 hours to break down the food we eat. So it is always good to eat regular small meals, otherwise the acid will attack the lining of the stomach to create acidity.
Acidity means an increased level of acid in the stomach. The stomach secretes Hydrochloric acid, a digestive juice that breaks down food particles into their smallest form to promote digestion. When there is an extra supply of hydrochloric acid in the stomach, this condition is known as Hyper-acidity.
The food we eat gets digested with help
of acids & enzymes secreted from the stomach. This acid enhance the
digestion process, when there is excess production of these acids it is called Hyper acidity.
Pulses / Dal : Minimize acid indigestion by avoiding these
Hyper acidity occurs as a result of eating
wrong things at the wrong time and in wrong quantities. It is a common disorder
affecting almost 45% people in our country. Though it can be regarded as a
disease of modernization due to irregular eating habits. It is a more psychosomatic
disorder caused due to mental stress & strain added with dietetic
in discrimination.
"Triphala prevents acidity & constipation."
(GASTROESOPHAGEAL REFLUX)
Lemon : Though it is acidic it pacifies pitta, (fire element), the burning sensation in stomach. It interacts with enzymes and its acid form becomes mineral composition.
Acid Re flux One get sour water in the mouth, there is a burning sensation in chest. The taste of the mouth becomes very bad, one has to sit initially then lie down, the acid comes out. One has to take antacids. This Acid Re flux generally happens due to very long gaping between meals, or very high stress levels, or very spicy food intake. This can be very well treated through diet without any medication. Proper diet and spacing of meals is all that is required. Avoid tea/coffee/spicy/fried, all these measures will also help a lot.
Peptic ulcer
Peptic ulcer is the most common disease of the alimentary tract. The immediate cause of ulceration is digestion of the mucous membrane by increase in the secretion of (acid and Pepsin) of the gastric juice. The lining of the digestive tract breaks down and ulcers are found.
Duodenal ulcer Our intestine has a remarkable ability to heal itself as it replaces its lining every 72 hours. But hyperacidity disrupts its function and causes ulceration.
If one has excessive pungent things he may suffer from acidity
The process of digestion involves mechanical (act of chewing) and chemical (action of enzymes) digestion. One should be aware that a brain reflex triggers the flow of saliva when we see or even think about food. The nervous pathway involved in salivary excretion requires stimulation of receptors in mouth, sensory impulse to the brain stem and parasympathetic impulses to salivary glands.
When we understand the food combining process the digestion becomes smooth and these disorders are minimized. Our food consist of carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vegetables and fruits, sweets, fried snacks, milk and milk products. All carbohydrate are acidic in nature and requires an alkaline medium to be digested completely. Most of the carbohydrates are digested in the mouth itself while chewing, by enzyme amylase present in saliva which is either alkaline or neutral.
Proteins requires an acidic medium and are digested in stomach where the stomach lining secretes Hydrochloric Acid (HCL). In the stomach the digestive enzymes like Pepsin digest proteins, Renin acts on milk and carbohydrates, Lipase partially acts on fatty substances.
Most of the fatty substances are digested in small intestine with the help of bile and pancreatic juices. Fats and oils coats the lining of stomach and prevents the secretion of H.C.L. Therefore, protein digestion gets slower and partial. Only small portion of fats are digested and all the improperly digested carbohydrates starts to ferment leading to gas production and bloating.
Milk and milk products are digested in small intestines (duodenum) and is partially digested or is fully fermented by the time it reaches the intestine.
Vegetables are primarily alkaline, while fruits can fall into acid or alkaline in nature. Hence it is important to combine them suitably and follow proper eating habits Yogic diet is highly recommended which is based on Ayurvedic principles emphasizing on circumventing the Viruddha Ahara combinations. Cause
Hyperacidity caused by a bacteria named Helicobacter pylori.
Due to relaxed cardiac sphincter, an expectant mother may suffer heartburn and acidity.Irregular Meals.
Excessive consumption of oily and spicy food
Stress
Over eating especially before going to bed
Bad posture after meals.(Lying down just after meals)
High protein diet causes hyperacidity.
long gap between meals.
Pregnancy.
Sedentary lifestyle/ lack of physical activity : Don't be a lazybones, being very sedentary can lead to excessive burping and acidity.
Prolonged sitting/ computer/ office work
Long distance traveling
Improper eating habits/ skipping of breakfast/ late night dinners
Smoking/ chewing of Paan Masala,
Tobacco etc.,
Excessive consumption of alcoholic drinks
Fast food/ junk food/ packed food
Cold drinks/ canned juices
Excessive drinking of hot tea/coffee : Having several cups of strong tea or coffee in the morning especially on an empty stomach., can have adverse effects such as acidity, gas and weight gain (Particularly if the tea or coffee are not sugar free).
Excessive consumption of high protein diet such as meat
Prolonged fasting / skipping meals / having little time for ourselves.
Skipping breakfast : It is a common cause for acidity, it results in acid build up in second half of the day.
When we eat incompatible food combinations, the food ferments in the stomach and the undigested food particles can lead to acidity and gas.
Excessive intake of food and liquids which are of opposite qualities,
fermented, preserved, sour, pungent, hot, salty food
Prolonged use of analgesics, antibiotics and steroids
Mental stress & strain/ suppression of natural urges
Insufficient sleep at night, sleeping immediately after meals
When you feel rushed for time your breathing becomes shallower and the stomach muscle get constricted. The emotion is also accompanied by the building up of pressure in a pit of stomach. The outcome acidity and gas builds up.
If a person has Hyper acidity and does not observe Diet control or Pathya, (for example he takes spicy, hot foods, alcoholic beverages,) how can he be cured even with a plethora of medicine.
If a person has hyperacidity But if the same person follows Pathya (i.e. he avoids spicy foods, hot food, alcohol beverages) he does not need medicines at all.
Milk tea, like other types of tea contains caffeine and tannins, which can both contribute to acidity. caffeine is a natural stimulant that can increase the production of stomach acid, while tannins can irritate the lining of stomach and contribute to acid reflux.
In addition, the milk in milk tea can also contribute to acidity. Milk is slightly acidic, and consuming large amounts of it can increase the overall acidity of the stomach.
For some people, consuming milk tea on an empty stomach, or in large quantity can exuberate acidity and can lead to symptom such as heart burn, stomach pain and nausea. Additionally adding sugar or other sweeteners to milk tea can also increase its acidity.
However its important to note that everyone's tolerance to acidic foods and beverages can vary, and not everyone can experience acidity after consuming milk tea. If you find that milk tea causes discomfort, or symptoms of acidity it may be helpful to reduce your consumption or try drinking with food to help neutralize the acidity.
Acid & Alkali
The acid produced in the metabolic activities such as uric acid and lactic acid react with the alkalis in the blood, the lymph, bile etc. thus being neutralized and therefore cause no harm. But if our diet is replete with acidogenic foods, the body cannot cope with all resulting acid. When the acid accumulates in the blood, symptoms related with acidic blood like fatigue headache, anorexia, insomnia, nervous tension, hyperacidity etc begins to appear.
Acid blood in an abnormal condition, hinders the physical development of children and adolescent, causes degeneration in older people and diminishes vitality. It causes difficulties in pregnancy and lactation. It is the origin of disease like measles, appendicitis, pneumonia, tuberculosis, and cancer. Therefore after long research it is believed that there is no such thing as natural death, all so called natural death are the culminating stages of chronic acid conditions of the blood. Therefore it is concluded that all toxic substances in the body are in the form of acid. In order to prevent or counteract the accumulation of acids in the body we must take food that is mainly alkaline in nature.
Ayurveda
Pitta Dosha
To understand the disease one has to
understand the concept of ‘agni’ the fire of life. It has been
given a pivotal place in the delicate balance between health and disease. This
impaired ‘agni’ shows the effect on ‘pitta’ the fiery energy of the body
responsible for transformation,‘Amlapitta’ is the by-product of this
defective process. It is the resultant of ‘teekshnaagni’
says Ayurveda.
In Amlapitta
the quantity of Pachaka pitta is
increased. Its quality of normal bitter taste (alkaline) is changed to more
sour taste (acidic) as a result of fermentation. Due to this increased sour
quality of pitta, it is called as Amlapitta
( the literal meaning of Amla is
sour).
In Ayurveda, acidity is called Ama Pitta. This condition is caused by an imbalance of Pitta dosha. The humor is handled by the elements of fire and water; these, in turn, control the digestive fire and stomach enzymes. This is also the reason why Pitta nature people turn to suffer from Hyper-acidity, peptic ulcers, and indigestion. Things that enhance the Pitta dosha like anger, stress, hot and spicy foods, very hot environment can also bring on a bout of acidity. While Pitta is generally the one indicted for acid indigestion, the Kapha dosha has its place in the stomach and the chest. Because Kapha controls the digestive juices and causes mucus, indigestion that results from low metabolism and mucus congestion are natural in acid reflux. You can get Kaphic acid reflux if you have a feel of sluggishness, feel a bitter taste in your mouth after late-night meals, chest congestion in the morning, a heavily coated tongue, and a tendency to pile on weight.
Signs

Heartburn & Acidity / Gastritis in Pregnancy : This is common from mid pregnancy onwards. When the baby is growing bigger, the uterus pushes the stomach to cause heartburn. Also the hormones released during pregnancy can sometimes relax the valve between your stomach & esophagus. When stomach acid leaks out, this can result in heartburn. It occurs especially before bed time or immediately after food. Small amount of food from the stomach re-enter the food pipe since the stomach valve relaxes and also because of the pressure the growing baby exerts against the stomach. If this happens several times in a day, a burning sensation is felt in the food pipe. To avoid it happening, the stomach should not be completely full or empty. In an empty stomach, acid formation causes this feeling. Sips of cold milk should relieve this burning.
To sleep on a full stomach will also cause discomfort. It is good idea to stay propped up during the night if it gets very bad. A few extra pillows or cushions will help you stay more upright while you sleep, and it can be quite comfortable. Better still eat dinner by 7-8 pm.
Avoid taking spicy or vinegary foods, alcohol. Have four to six moderate meals, instead of two large meals, in a day.
Diagnosis
Upper G I Endoscopy a gastroenterologist, surgeon, or other trained health care professional uses an endoscope to see your upper Gastro -intestinal (G I tract). This procedure takes place at a hospital or a outpatient center.
An intravenous (IV) needle will be placed in your arm to provide a sedative. Sedatives help you stay relaxed and comfortable during the procedure. In some cases, the procedure can be performed without sedation. You will be given a liquid anesthetic to gargle or spray anesthetic on the back of your throat. The doctor carefully feeds the endoscope down your esophagus and into your stomach and duodenum. A small camera mounted on the endoscope sends a video image to a monitor, allowing close examination of the lining of your upper GI tract. The endoscope pumps air into your stomach and duodenum, making them easier to see.
The doctor may perform a biopsy with the endoscope by taking a small piece of tissue from the lining of your esophagus. You won’t feel the biopsy. A pathologist examines the tissue in a lab
X Ray
An X Ray technician performs this procedure at a hospital or an outpatient center. A radiologist reads and reports on the x-ray images. You don’t need anesthesia. A health care professional will tell you how to prepare for the procedure, including when to stop eating and drinking.
During the procedure, you will stand or sit in front of an X-ray machine and drink barium, to coat the inner lining of your upper GI tract. The X-ray technician takes several X-rays as the barium moves through your GI tract. The upper GI series can’t show (Gastroesophageal reflux
disease) G.E.R.D in your esophagus; rather, the barium shows up on the x-ray and can find problems related to G.E.R.D, such as
Hiatus hernia
Esophageal stricture
Ulcers
Mix rice (acidic) with lots of vegetable (alkaline), have chapati (acidic) with sprouts (alkaline) etc.
Lifestyle
Regularly practice the recommended Yogasana, Pranayama and Kriyas for about an hour.
Walk for 10 minutes after eating without fail. Walking and prone asanas will eliminate excess gas formed in the intestine.
Avoid ultimately and irregular food habits.
Do not remain hungry. Avoid fasting. However do not eat when not hungry.
Do not over eat. Take small frequent meals combining acid and alkaline type.
Chew the food mindfully at least 32 times.
Drink water sip by sip. When the stomach is empty and more saliva gets into the stomach, the neutralizing effect of the acid environment occurs in the stomach. The pH (an indicator of the level of acidity or alkalinity) of saliva in the mouth is alkaline and when it reaches the stomach that is acidic it will help in neutralizing and balancing the level of acidity.
Avoid lying down immediately after food. Wait for at least 30-45 minutes. When you lie down avoid sleeping in supine position or on your right side for next one hour.
The best recommended position is lie to the left side, laterally. Your stomach and the heart are on the left axis of your body. The aorta of the heart arises and curves down to left. If you sleep turning to the right side or in the supine position, heart has to pump more blood, and sufficient quantity of blood may not be available that is required for the digestion.
Clear the bowels every day thoroughly, Periodically detox the body by purging or adopting a suitable yogic kriya.
Avoid smoking, alcohol, tea, coffee, carbonated beverages and aspirin like drugs. Avoid stress.
Weight loss can relieve acid reflux.
Select four to six meals a day at periodic intervals.
Daytime sleep for one hour before lunch can also help.
Always eat freshly prepared food
Get away from rich, burdensome meals, and junk food that may not agree with your health.
Drink abundant of water between meals.
Taking buttermilk (1-2 glasses) with meals helps in digestion of food
Taking proper sleep at least of 6-8 hour at night
While consuming, masticate food gradually
There should be no haste and hustle before and after meals
Doing physical exercises/ meditation/ yoga
Taking balanced diet at proper time
Relax your body and mind at meal hour
Vegetarian diet, because non-vegetarian foods are rich in protein, which
may precipitate the attack of hyper acidity
Cold milk is excellent in this condition
Do not eat fast chew your food properly
Avoid skipping breakfast
Managing anger and stress
Have a creative hobby to keep your self-busy and engaged
Eat well cooked less spicy food.
Regularize your sleeping pattern.
Meditation is good for stress and tension.
Sweet first and Bitter & astringent at last.
Raise the head end of the bed.
Wedge Shaped Pillow
Shat Pavali : Walk 100 steps before sleeping. The best thing to avoid indigestion after a meal is to go for a walk honestly.
Improper sleeping habits.
Yoga Asana (Physical Posture)
The recommended asana activates the sympathetic nervous system increasing the body's flight and flight response. These Asanas will enhance the metabolic rate, overall physical and physiological functions.
● Bow pose Dhanurasana ( धनुरासन )
Technique : In this posture spine is stretched back.First lie on the stomach and fold up the legs maintaining the ankles on the hip. Both knees and toes should be touching. Now hold both the legs with both hands from the ankle. While breath in knees should be raised and thighs should be stretched up and keep the hands straight. Technique : During our lifetime, we accumulate mental, muscular and emotional tensions, and they affect our health. In yoga the way to release these tensions is through the practice of relaxation or yoga nidra. This practice induces (Sense of withdrawal) Pratyahar, a state in which a mind is isolated and the senses do not feed the brain with fresh information. When there is complete isolation from the influx of the senses, the consciousnesses, the mind and the brain undergo metamorphosis, a complete transformation. It is as if a new brain, mind and conscientiousness are been created out of the old brain, mind and consciousnesses. Benefit :
It is beneficial for acidity.
All mental, muscular and emotional tensions are immediately relaxed.
Pranayama
Pranayama are the excellent way to prevent hyperacidity and gastritis. Pranayama activates the parasympathetic nervous system and significantly aids in proper digestion, assimilation and excretion of waste. The breath regulation exercises aids in oxygenating the body cells / tissues that have become dormant cells will nourish and heal the imbalance and injury and restore the health back.
Kapalabhati

Contraindications / Cautions
Since Hyper-acidity and Gastritis is non life threatening disorder, it is Okay to try most of the asanas.. However if this disorder is accompanied with other complications, counselling with doctors and the yoga therapist is neccessary. If the yoga session results in heartburn, or any other hyperacidity related symptoms, despite adhering to the food guidelines prior to practice, then it is advised to avoid inversions and reverse postures (Shirshasana, Halasana, Sarvanga asana, Chakrasana) and any asana in which the head is lower than the stomach. Adopt variations and props for some of the asanas mentioned to get the best results.
Diet
Famous saying : "Meal seekers has no disease."
Avoid eating excessive spicy, sour, and salty items, fried and junk foods items that contains preservatives.
Consume less of protein rich foods, oily, spicy foods. Completely avoid refrigerated foods. and stale food. Reheated food becomes difficult to digest. Always eat freshly prepared food.
Replace coffee, tea with herbal tea made of holy basil (Krishna tulsi), Tinospora cardifolia (Amrita Balli) ginger, turmeric and aloe. These are some of the best liver protectants. Liver detoxifies all toxins and helps in preventing formation of bad cholesterol.
Do not drink water for at least for one hour soon after any meals. Instead drink diluted buttermilk with Asafoetida (Hing), Mint, (Pudina), and Cumin (Jeera) powder. Never drink refrigerated water.
Eat a raw salad with lot of cucumber before eating a heavy meal.
Buttermilk is best consumed after seasoning with mustard and Asafoetida.
Eating a small quantity of dark brown jaggery or palm jaggery at the end of meal is a good habit. This is good for digestion and absorption. The lactic acid acid bacteria present in the freshly prepared curd help in digestion. Avoid using jaggery that is light brown in colour that is qualitatively same as sugar. Darker the colour the better it is.
Consume natural probiotic sources like yogurt, curds, buttermilk, etc. Include prescribed probiotics if required.
Consume Indian Gooseberry (Amla) juice or powder or any form, everyday in empty stomach is highly beneficial to reduce gastritis.
Include ample ginger, cumin, Ajowain, caraway, asafoetida (Hing), Ghee in cooking.
Cumin, ginger, mint, coriander, decoction cleanses the intestine and reduces the abdominal spasm. Make it point to drink at least two glasses of the digestive concoction every day in case of chronic acidity or gastritis.
Avoid consuming all incompatible (Viruddha Ahara) food combinations.
Always add a small quantity of ghee to your Food without fail. It will pacify and expel the accumulated toxins and help in good digestion.
Always eat fruits at least 30 minutes before any main meal or two to three hours.
When suffering from severe symptoms, avoid solid food. Consume Ragi malt or porridge made from puffed paddy mixed with little ghee and salt. To energize, drink warm milk fortified with soaked and pureed dry dates.
In order to prevent or counteract the accumulation of acid in the body we must take food that is mainly alkali. genic.
All fruits are alkali- genic they are figs, grapes, dates, raw tomatoes, lemon, , plums, sweet apples etc.
All vegetables like -, leafy greens, salad plants, cucumber, beet root, yams, radish, pumpkin, potatoes etc are alkali genic.
Skimmed milk and cream are alkali genic.
Acid genic foods are polished rice, de husked rice, cake, bread, barley while wheat flour (maida), wheat flour etc. Polished rice and maida are the highest acid - genic.
All pulses are highly acid genic. Among nuts, peanuts are the highest acid genic.
In non vegetarian foods yolk of eggs is highly acid genic with all kinds of meat.
In milk products cheese is the highest acid genic and butter is the lowest acid genic.
Therefore being highly acid genic meat, fish , eggs and pulses are to be avoided.Whole wheat flour, dehusked, unpolished rice and other cereals, are mildly acidic genic. Maida is highly acid genic. Hence preparation of maida are to be avoided.
Processing or refining adds to the acid genic effect to the cereals. Hence refined oils are also not to be used. Unrefined oils are good in moderation.
All vegetables and fruits are alkali genic hence they get special importance in the food regime.
Tea, coffee, fried preparations, idli, dosa are all acid genic hence they should be used in moderation.
Rice, dal, curry, khichadi, bhakris, which comprise the usual evening meals are also acid genic. Hence soups of vegetables are to be introduced in everyday meals.
We have to maintain a balance between the acids and alkalies in the body by a judicial combination of various unprocessed cereals like ragi, jowar, baajra, with raw vegetables, fruits, nuts and soups in our daily diet- thus keeping disease at bay.
Acidic Foods
Cereals
Cereals like wheat*, rice* dry corn*, etc. and their flour . Their products like bread pasta noodles, vermicelli, poha*, rawa*, oats*, brown rice*, buckwheat**,and ragi** (nachani)
Pulses & Legumes
All dals* and pulses*, specially tuvar dal*, soyabean* and its products like milk, granules, chunks etc.. chana dal flour besan etc..
If you are not lactose intolerant, drinking cold milk can help stabilize gastric juices in the stomach. Since it is rich in calcium, it also prevents the build-up of excess acid in the stomach. It is thus one of the simplest remedies when you have an acidity attack. Just reach out for a glass of cold milk and drink it right away.
Banana
Banana is perhaps the best natural antacids that guards against acidity. Rich in potassium, it is advisable to eat one banana every day and if you have long gaps in between meals, banana is the best snack option. So pick up this fruit as and when you feel discomfort and heartburn. Eat banana with cardemom.
Coconut Water
Coconut water, helps turn your body’s pH level from acidic to alkaline while also protecting the stomach from harmful effects of further acid production.
Fennel Seeds

Prevention
Easy steps to prevent acidity and indigestion.
1 . Eat healthy and 80% of your appetite :
Everyone should follow the principle of "hara bachi bu", a Japanese term meaning "eat until you're 80% full. It originated in the city of Okinawa, where people use this advice as a way to control their eating habits. Interestingly they have the lowest rates of illness from heart disease, cancer and stroke and a fairly long life expectancy. Visualize a blender. Will the blender work if you fill it up to the top ? No you have to leave room for the blender to do its job.
The same rule applies to your stomach. Allow 20% of the space for air, digestive juices, saliva and bile to do their work of digesting food. Next time you have an appetite for three piece of bread, eat two pieces, and wait for a few minutes for the massage to go from the stomach to the brain, if it's full or not. If you still feel like eating more, have another half a piece of bread. This habit allows you to leave some room for the stomach to digest the food.
2 . Chew your food 32 times :
Chewing food properly creates a lot of digestive saliva in your mouth, and that aids digestion in the stomach. Chewing intended to break down food so that it looses texture. For most types of food, an average of 32 chews is recommended. Of course, compared to a slice of bread, you need to chew less when eating soft water filled foods like watermelon.
3 . Don't drink water, juices or soda while eating food : When you drink fluids while eating, it washes away the digestive juices from your stomach. It can dilute your digestive fluids. Water is a coolant, and regularly indulging in consuming it during or right after meals can interfere with the digestion process. Therefore this practice is not encouraged. Wait for at least half an hour before having water once you are done with your meal
4 . A bonus tip to prevent Acidity :To stimulate your senses use your fingers to eat solid foods when appropriate. The nerve ending of the finger tips are said to improve digestion. In fact when you eat with your hands and your finger tips engaged, you become more conscious of the flavours, texture and aromas. Eating with your hands sends a signal to your brain about the texture and temperature of food that the stomach can expect. This therefore helps in quick and proper digestion.
Circadian rhythm
Human Biological Clock
The strong connection between dietary patterns and circadian rhythm must not be ignored.
Introduction
Circadian rhythms are physical, mental, and behavioral changes that follow a 24-hour cycle. These natural processes respond primarily to light and dark and affect most living things, including animals, plants, and microbes. Chronobiology is the study of circadian rhythms.
Do you know our dietary patterns, appetite and satiety are all regulated by our circadian rhythm? Unfortunately, we do not align our eating habits to it , and revolve it around our work schedules, social colanders and convenience instead, not realizing the pressure we put on our bodies to work against what it's designed for.
"The circadian rhythm and its impact on digestion is a law of nature that we should align ourselves with."
Not everyone needs a diet plan. Just by tweaking their meal timings and aligning it with the circadian rhythm, they can start to see noticeable improvement in their health like high energy levels, alertness, better sleep, digestion and water retention., waking up with a flatter stomach, no bloating, clearer skin, lesser cravings, and so much more.
What does eating according to the circadian rhythm mean?
In simple words, it means aligning our meals timings and patterns to the sunset and sun rise, because of its impact on our digestion. As per circadian rhythm our digestive fire wakes up as the sun rises, peak around noon,, and slow down as the sun sets.
Eating in accordance with this rhythm means we consume our first meal of the day after sunrise, eat a substantial lunch in the afternoon and our last meal of the day with or close to, sunset followed by fasting through the night till the next morning,
The morning appetite
As the sun start to rise, so does our digestive fire. The first meal of the day thus should be post sunrise, especially if you feel hungry. If you don't embrace it because your body is still elimination and processing the last meal.
At the same time , eating too early, before the sun rises, can go against circadian rhythm because your metabolic fire and digestive ability are not activated yet. The body is still in the detoxification process and nothing that you eat so early is going to be broken down effectively.
The afternoon appetite
When the sun is atop, our digestive fire is at its peak. This makes lunch time really important and gives us the opportunity to have a really good meal. In fact aiming for a maximum calorie intake from your breakfast and lunch and the least from your dinner best supports our digestion and the circadian rhythm. What this also means is that the ideal time to eat a desert is in the afternoon.
The evening appetite
for As the sun starts setting and it gets dark our body naturally start to secrete melatonin. The hormone that is responsible for inducing sleep. As a result a body slows down and is least interested in digestion. It is now more foccussed on repair, recovery, growth, rejuvenation, elimination and healing. To support this, its best to start tapering calorie intake and eat your last meal close to sunset, followed by giving our digestion a complete breakthrough. by fasting. This is also called the circadian rhythm and is by far the most natural way to fast.
Late night meals
for Our body is not designed to digest and break down food, as the sun starts setting. If you do have a late night meal, your body will still try to digest, but at the cost of
Irregular blood sugar levels
Constipation
Acidity
bloating
Sluggishness the next day
This is because the circadian rhythm is challenged. The pancreas also has a melatonin receptor, indicating that on the release of melatonin, when it gets dark it binds to the receptor on the pancreatic cells, thereby suppressing its function. This speaks volumes about why a late night meal can mess up your digestion and sugar levels., and you may even wake up feeling acidic and heavy. Melatonin upon its release blocks pancreatic functions because digesting food at night is not what your body is interested in.
If you do end up eating late, since your metabolism is slow, it is a struggle for your body to break down the food. You make your pancreas churn out more digestive enzymes, make your stomach produce more acids and forced itself to digest the meal. The Dutch and Europeans enjoy croissants, chocolate, pastries and similar foods in the morning when the metabolism is at its highest.
What about late night snacking?
Your body is not designed to digest food late at night. It is that simple. Now consider all of these events, how the body functions, and what may happen when you disrupts this circadian rhythm. The moment you have a late night meal, you disrupt every part of the rhythm, because it is all connected.
The circadian rhythm and its impact on digestion is a law of nature. If we challenge the law of nature by going against the circadian rhythm that governs thousands of functions in the human body at a cellular level, and even the best treatment, medicines, doctors, nutritionist, spiritual healers or yogi expert will not work.
And what if we align ourselves with the law of nature and add the right medicine, lifestyle, food, and so on ? That is what we begin to see prevention, healing recovery and healthy improvement occurs.
