While western health sciences look to the physical body for their data, studying them as isolated parts, Ayurvedic medicine describes different tissues, organs and systems viewing them as groups of interrelated and inter dependent structures and functions. The different tissues are integrated within themselves and at the same time with the mind and conciousness of the person. Having this union of body, mind and conciousness is then seen as harmonized with the family, society and the environment.

Modern science likes to believe that it was the first to discover that each individual has a unique biological code. But the practice has been present in different societies all over the world  since the dawn of time. Ayurveda, Unani and Chinese medicine speaks  about the existence  of body types (or humors)  and how different constitutions respond differently  to the same foods.

There are three (Biological energies) present inside the body and mind called wind (vata), fire (pitta) & water (kapha). In normal condition they are energies, but in abnormal condition they become doshas. or disease conditions. All three doshas are originated from 5 basic elements of nature (Pancha - Mahabhuta) . AIR, WATER, SPACE, FIRE & EARTH.

Regulating Kapha Dosha : By providing adequate moisture, eliminating dryness of skin."

This dosha is derived from  the element of water and  and earth. Kapha governs the structure and lubrication  in one's body. It controls weight, growth,, lubrication in joints and lungs and formation of all seven tissues.- nutritive, fluids, blood fats, muscles, bone marrow and reproductive tissue.

                                                 "Excessive SALT increases Kapha."
Introduction
Within the human being different anatomical structures and physiological processes have common
attributes and are closely influenced by each other. Such related structures and functions are grouped into three governing  biological elements, leading to psycho-physiological factors, called Doshas.

The doshas which rule everything are Vata, Pitta, Kapha and constitutes the structural and functional units of all the living cells, tissues, organs and the body as a whole.

One unit (cells) each of Vata, Pitta and Kapha is the minimal requirement for the beginning of life in the most primitive form. They originate from the five basic elements e.g. Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Space. Structure, Stability, Strength, Immunity, Lubrication, Cohesion :

Kaphaja
The twenty disorders of Kapha are characterized  by satiety, sleepiness, and excess sleep sensation of heaviness,  and cold, lassitude, sweet taste and salivation, mucus expectoration, indigestion restriction of the heart and throat, pooling of vessels,  Goitre, obesity, urticaria, whiteness in urine, eyes and feces. A good physician identifies the stamp of kapha by its foot print which are visible in lubricant nature, coldness, whiteness, heaviness,  and sweetness of the affected part. The management should be based on  diet and medications with pungent bitter, astringent and sharp hot and rough properties and the observance of proper dosage and time for therapy.  Emesis is the procedure of choice for elimination disturbed kapha. It succeeds in the same manner as the crop of paddy or barley dries up as soon as the water in the field is  allowed to escape through a gap of ridge.

SOLID KAPHA - WET, HEAVY, COLD

Structure, Stability, Strength, Immunity, Lubrication, Cohesion : The biological combination of the two heavy material elements, Earth and Water gives a muddy rise to an amalgam called Kapha. The word 'Sleshma' is a synonym for Kapha which means to embrace. The cold, heavy, sweet, stable, steady, dense, smooth, slow, viscid, soft, wet and unctous (चिकना) nature of Kapha molecules are responsible for uniting two molecules and giving compactness to the body. It fills the intercellular spaces of the body as connective tissue.

Kapha is like the moon governing cell growth, fluid balance of the tissue, the gross structure and the strength of the body, stability of joints and body, lubrication, immunity and power and it controls the lymphatic system. It's basic responsibility is support and protection.

Tissue and waste of the body are the province of Kapha. Kapha is the principle of potential energy. There is much stored prana in the heavier elements. Lots of mass and vitality waiting to be utilized. To become  available for action, fire and air must be added to earth and water.
The prominence of heavier elements, when in balance can offer much safety and support. Physically Kapha is strong, robust with great endurance and sexual prowess; when unbalanced, often overweight, congested and plodding (slow-moving).
When in balance, mentally and emotionally the Kapha type is gentle, meditative, peaceful, steadfast, sincere, soothing, calm, full of love, compassion, forgiveness, understanding and with a good long term memory. When unbalanced, greed, attachment and lethargy are common.
When a Kapha attribute is increased excessively, such as too much cold moist food (like an ice- creamed binge), the heavy wet qualities increase, mobility decreases, the Kapha becomes sluggish and congested and may become depressed as the energy drops. To come into balance, the Kapha would need to add heat (more Pitta) and movement (Vata). Remedy like Ginger tea and a vigorous walk.

While the structures and functions of Tridoshas Vat, Pitta and Kapha are spread throughout the body, in general Kapha is more predominant in the area above the diaphram.

Though the chest  is the primary location of the Kapha Dosha, the larynx, throat, head, joints, stomach, chyle,, nose, sinus, tongue, stomach, lymph and fatty tissues and its secondary sites. Within the digestive system, the primary location of kapha is the stomach.

Kapha - Kapha Dosha originates from the water. Kapha provides nutrition to the body and regulates the other two doshas, Pitta and Vayu. Kapha makes the organ of the body moist and lubricates joints, increases strength, enthusiasm, heals wounds, strengthen the immunity, provides energy, promotes patience, knowledge and wisdom. Regulates mental balance and also protects the tissue from wear and tear.

Kapha is the primary reason for lethargy and inertia. If Kapha decreases, Pitta and Vayu increases and damage the dhatus, joints, heart and body parts.

Finally it is principally the water and earth elements which combine to form the Kapha dosha.. Kapha what is responsible for growth, adding structure unit by unit. Another function of kapha dosha is to offer protection. Cerebral-spinal fluid protects the brain and spinal column and is a type of kapha found in the body. Also the mucosal lining of the stomach is another example of kapha dosha protecting the tissues.

"In Ayurveda infancy is a Kapha prominent age with vata energy."

Modern science likes to believe that it was the first to discover that each individual has a unique biological code. But the practice has been present in different societies all over the world  since the dawn of time .Ayurveda, Unani and Chinese medicine speaks  about the existence  of body types (or humors) / constitution and how different constitutions respond differently  to the same foods.

There are three (Biological energies) present inside the body and mind called wind (vata), fire (pitta) & water (kapha). In normal condition they are energies, but in abnormal condition they become diseases / doshas. These three doshas are originated from 5 basic elements of nature (Panch- Mahabhuta). EARTH, WATER, FIRE, SPACE & AIR.

The word ‘Kapha is derived from two letters ‘ ka’ (water) and ‘pha’ (flourishes). Thus Kapha means that which flourishes in  the presence of water. Also known as shleshma  is derived from the verb root ‘shlish’ - the word ‘ shlish’ meaning ‘to embrace (uniting, heating etc. Are the basic functions of  shleshma). Unction, (to coat, लेप करना binding, providing firmness, heaviness, virility and strength in the body, forbearance, patience and absence of greed these are the normal functions of Kapha.

Kapha is oily, sweet, heavy, soft, firm, cold moist and white.People with dominant kapha Dosha have kapha body type. People with Kapha constitution or Prakriti have abundance of strength, material wealth knowledge and peace. They also have a long life span.

Kapha governs form and substance and is responsible for weight, cohesion and stability. It is the fluid solution, the internal ocean, in which the other two humours (vata & kapha) move, and constitutes the main substance of the body. It provides for proper lubrication and discharge of secretions and cushions the nerves, mind and the senses. Kapha predominates in the bodily tissues and in the upper part of the body stomach, lungs and head where mucus accumulates. It relates  to the senses of taste and smell which corresponds to the water and earth.

Low Kapha symptoms of dryness, burning sensation, looseness of joints and lack of sleep.

According to Unani : At times, accumulated phelgm, can also lead to joint pain, (Rheumatoid Arthritis) which usually occurs as a reduction of the fluid between the joints (synovial fluid). A few causes of this condition are

          • Extreme cold
          • Increase of phelgm in the body
          • Cold climate
          • Cold temperament

Kapha people on the other hand crave rich and fried foods in winter. Which make them sluggish and slow . As a result, they tend to retain water. And they also tend to be prone to sinus and Asthma Attacks.

          Unlock your brain power
There are three important aspects to mental performances
Dhi - learning and comprehension, govern by vata dosha
Dhriti - processing and retention of knowledge, the realm of pitta dosha,
Smriti = memory or recall, controlled by kapha dosha.

          SITES OF KAPHA

Kapha has preferred location in the body : chest, head, neck, joints, stomach and fat. but chest is its special seat.
An emphasized repeatedly, the balance of doshas is indispensable for good health and the healthy life that goes with it.
Conversely the perturbation of doshas (dosavaisamya) is the principle mechanism for endogenous disease which are innumerable. Of these are eighty, forty and twenty diseases which prominently own their genesis to the disturbance of  vata, pitta and kapha respectively.

Urad dal is suitable gor kapha constitution , it would be unsuitable to a pitta and vata constitution. because of its endothermic (ushna) nature and its difficulty in digestion (gurutva)

Decrease intake of sweet, sour, salty (increases earth & water), example : potatoes and other root vegetables, oils, dairy, avocadoes, wheat, and fried and heavy foods.
          Course of Doshas
The status of vata, pitta and kapha is a constant background to disorders of the head, heart  and abscesses including those complicating diabetes. Doshas are dynamic entities which are prone to  movement in three directions.

1 . In the first place, they may remain normal.
          • Or may swing towards diminution
          • Or accumulation.
2 . Secondly they may move upwards, downwards or  in a oblique direction in the body with  corresponding manifestations.

3 . Thirdly, the perturbed doshas may migrate to the gut, vital organs or joints.

At another level, doshas may follow a dual status as normal or abnormal.
          In the normal state,
          pitta causes digestion
          Kapha is responsible for strength.
And vata  represent the life breath and sustain every kind of movement in the body.

          When the status shifts to abnormal, pitta produces several disorders;
Kapha becomes a execrable impurity and
vata brings about many diseases and may even stop the breath of life.

Lastly doshas respond to the change of seasons, which should recieve the attention of physician. Pitta undergoes aggregation, perturbation and quietude during rains, autumn and early winter. Kapha is concentrated, perturbed and composed in early winter, spring and summer.

Vata tends to accumulate, vitiate and settles down during summer, rains and autumn.

Given so many factors within and without which can always turn hostile, an individual turning for long life should be particular in following a proper code of living.

Whilst the kaphic constitution is a strong one, when they do fall ill, they are prone to disorders of accumulation, with mucous congestion, oedema, calcium deposits and heaviness. They also tend towards lethargy and can get into a sort of  'blue funk' a kind of bored depression. They are likely to stop moving simply because they are content to stay where they are and can easily turn into good natured couch potatoes. At their worst they can go on to become lazy, greedy and severely self indulgent.

          • Pitta becomes angry, nasty (अरुचिकर), confrontational (टकराव वाला)

          • and intimidation (डराना ).
          • Kapha is  indifferent (उदासीन), acting out withdrawal (वापसी ) and stubbornness (हठ).

THE FIVE  SUBTLE FORMS OF KAPHA
There are five forms of Kapha in cohesion and lubrication. These are known as sub - doshas.
The elements that compose Kapha are in themselves more gross than both Vata and Pitta and the Kaphic elements present more solid matter.

          1 . Brain Kapha sub-dosha- Tarpaka तरपक क्ष्लेष्मा
          Nervous system support

          Location heart
Function Nourishment to all the sense organ
Nourishes the sense Organs and nervous tissue, (Majja dhatu), Tarpaka is the white matter of the brain, the nutrition for the nerve cells, nourishment for all the sense Organs and the cerebrospinal fluid (the carrier and sustenance for intelligence). It stabilizes feelings and provides emotional calmness.

          2 . Salivary Kapha subdosha - Bodhaka बोधक क्ष्लेष्मा
          Located in tongue
          Function Perception of the taste.
It enables taste perception through saliva (understands the tastes in food and in turn stimulates digestive fire, (Agni) softens the food for digestion and adds subtle digestive materials.

          3 . Stomach Kapha subdosha - Kledaka क्लेदक क्ष्लेष्मा
          Location stomach
          Moistens the food substance
          Stomach secretions

          Introduction

          What is Kapha?

The biological combination of two heavy material elements, Earth and Water gives a muddy rise to an amalgam called "Kapha". Kapha is an energy found in the human body, in foods, in the environment, the time of the day and also your age. Kapha energy among humans provides strength, stamina, good skin and hair and a calm temperament. Kapha gives food high binding and cohesive properties, increases body mass and strength, cools and increases moistness in the body. Kapha in the environment means it is cold, moist, heavy and slow. In the diurnal cycle Kapha energy manifest at night.

"Pha" means to fructify  or grow in bulk. As Kapha mainly consist of waterThe seven tissues (dhatus)  which constitutes the body decay all the time (therefore body is also called {शरीर }, and receive replenishment through food. Upon digestion food releases two products, both of which are regarded as nutrients  (Prasada dhatu) contribute to the building and repair of seven tissues; Waste products or (Maladhatu) such as  sweat, urine, feces etc.

Also include vata, pitta and kapha which remain essential so long  as they maintain in due proportion with reference to themselves as well as to the other tissues. When vata, pitta and kapha become deficient or excessive in quantity (perturbed or prakupit) they become disease (doshas) which unsettled the tissues in a variety of disorders. As the victims of disturbance, these are  called disease or Doshas (दोष)

The word ‘Sleshma’ is a synonym for Kapha which means to embrace. The cold heavy, sweet, stable, steady, smooth, slow, viscid, soft, wet and unctuous nature (smooth and greasy in texture ) of Kapha molecules are responsible for uniting two molecules and giving compactness to the body. It fills the intercellular spaces of the body as connective tissue.

Now that winter is in full swing, prepare for coughs, colds, respiratory troubles, lung and sinus infections and weight gain. This is due to low immunity, an incorrect diet and lifestyle, a constitutional predisposition towards a cough disorder, and environmental conditions. Here are some FAQ, about kapha.

          Is the Kapha season unhealthy?

Actually this the best season to build immunity and stamina and improve your skin and hair. But you need to balance the environment with the correct nutrition, lifestyle and exercise.

Why do we need to balance Kapha?

People who already have high kapha in their system accumulate more in this season. This may lead to disorders such as high cholesterol, increased weight, increase in blood sugar, increase in bile thickness, gallbladder, stone tendency, cholesterol blockages, vulnerability to fibroids, arthritic pain, sinusitis and the accumulation of fluid in the respiratory system.

Is Phlegm the same as Kapha?

Phlegm is only a small aspect of Kapha excess, For good health, we need the correct balance of Kapha. Therefore foods high in Kapha should be eaten with caution in this season. These include milk, curd (high Kapha), cold drinks, red meat, bananas, processed cheese (high Kapha) rice, cashew nuts, coconut, ghee, butter, fried foods, processed and refined foods, watery fruits like melons and cucumber, oily foods, sugar and sweets.

          Conjugation with Dosha
When it conjugate with Kapha, leads to lack of appetite, imparts easy belching, foul smelling viscid thick mucus and feeling of heaviness.
          ACTION
Kapha is the principle providing material for physical structure, body, vigour, body stability, and immunity, lubrication of joints and supporting memory.
It also governs emotions like forgiveness, calmness and love.

The Kapha skin is thick, oily soft and cool to touch. Complexion is pale, and the hair thick, wavy, oily and dark. The Kapha skin tends to develop wrinkles much later in life than Vata or Pitta types. If the skin becomes imbalanced it can suffer from enlarged pores, excessively oily skin, most types of eczema, blackheads or pimples and water retention.
Kapha skin, because of its thickness and oiliness,is more prone to accumulate AMA - toxins under the skin.

In brief, while the predominant Kapha in childhood promotes growth and development by supporting the anabolic activities.

THE WATER ELEMENT  (JALA MAHABHUTA) (आपः)
Soma / water or ap, (आपः) which underlies Kapha is responsible for good and bad effects depending on its state. The effects include
          • Firmness

          • Building and wasting

          • Zeal and lethargy

          • Strength and weakness

          • Knowledge and ignorance

          • Comprehension and confusion.

As it is in nature, so it is in the body. All the five elements work in coordination and they facilitate the keep up of the health. This awareness helps us to realize the relationship of the five elements within the body.

                                                               "जल जो न होता तो ये जीवन जाता  जल"
"If there was no water, this life would have been burnt."

          THE EARTH ELEMENT (PRITHVI MAHABHUTA)
          Cohesive element,
          The principle of solidity.
          It represents mass.
          It's essential quality is smell.
Prithvi, earth maintains life. It is the solid state of matter,of which the characteristic attribute is stability, fixedness or rigidity. Earth is a solid, dense element which provides firm ground for global life. It is the quality that represents strength and stability in nature, giving form to the body.
Massiveness, ( jadatva), Roughness,(kharatva), Hardness, (kathinya), Slowness, (Mandya), Inactiveness,(nishkriyatva), Steadiness, (santhatva), Firmness, (dardhya), Clarity, (sparshatatva), denseness, (ghanatva), largeness, (vishalatva) or Bulkiness, (sthoolatva), are its properties. It produces sweet (with earth), sour (with fire) and astringent tastes (with air).It is neither hot nor cold, (Sama sheetoshnatva). Its movement is inward and centripetal.
Prithvi is represented by the heavier tissue of the body, such as connective tissue, heart, bones, cartilage, nails, hair and teeth. They contains more of the Earth element and thus provide the needed stability in the body for dealing with the strains and effort of life.

"All diseases caused by aggravated kapha and Pitta have their origin in stomach."

All nuts in general trigger Pitta and Kapha unless processed properly, eaten in right season and chosen as per body type. Others includes : sesame seeds, jaggery, eggs, Curd, cheese, Paneer, Cashew.

          Different stages of digestion

          • First stage

          • In the early stage of digestion, all the six tastes present in the food gets converted into sweet taste Madhur and give rise to the frothy stage of Kapha or Kapha with frothy nature.

          • Consumed material gets converted into a stage of sweet taste (Madhur) predominance.

          • Formation of frothy stage of Kapha.

"Whether in normal in normal or abnormal conditions Vata, Pitta and Kapha are always present in the body. In the normal state the three doshas perform critical functions which sustain body activities."

          Did you know?

If you are coughing uncontrollably, raise your hands above your head and it will stop.

Doshas has preferential abodes even though they move all over the body through ubiquitous channels. Kapha  is located in the head and chest.

Relationship of Doshas to Elements (Bhutas)
Doshas are in fact  no different from other Constituents (dhatus). They carry one element as the main and other element as the secondary constituents. Thus kapha is made up of water and earth.
So long as they are in the proportion, they are essential Waste products (Maladhatus). They become disease (doshas) when the proportion is seriously disturbed.
Dosas in mind : Tridosas primarily work upon the body but rajas and tamas would upset mind. Body and mind echoed each other in health and disease and the final cause of most illnesses was imprudent conduct, which was rooted in the mind.

          Digestive fire (Agni)
Charak states that  the three dosas are in balance in a body, when the fires in the stomach and the biological energies (dhatus) are in equilibrium. In a so called Vatala constitution (BODY TYPE), the fires become irregular, in pittal, the fires are intensified, and the kapha / sleshma constitution is marked by subdued fires. In other words , the dosha constitution, has more to do with the status of digestive fires and less with dosas.

          Tridosha Doctrine
A powerful effect of dosas could suggest another explanation - vata, pitta and kapha could represent three families of receptors  which are distributed across the body and are activated by specific molecular patterns or other specific stimuli in the internal or external environment. Once activated, a cascade of cellular signals would follow, affecting all kinds of cells, and no response would remain 'purely local' in so far as the receptors are  generalized in distribution. The cellular signal could lead to the release of a wide range of  substances such as cytokines and initiate inflammatory phenomena. The activation  of vata, pitta and kapha receptors could also send wake up signals to the immune system and trigger another set of response

"Constitution / Prakriti ( body type) Food not appropriate for one’s constitution may reduce immunity and cause disease."

"Spring season,Vasant Ritu - kapha prakopa."

          Season

          April - May

Kaphaja disorders prefer spring, pittaja autumn and vataja rains. Moreover, vataja ailments worsen at the end of the day and night, pittaja during midday and midnight. Still another example of the influence of time is the observation that vataja, pittaja and kaphaja disorders peak in the last, middle and initial phases of life. Also, vataja diseases worsen after digestion, when the stomach is empty: pittaja during digestion and kaphaja after the meals.
In Late winter sisira ritu Kapha undergoes only accumulation (caya).,by the use of food substances, which are unctuous cold etc.that are similar to Dosha. Kapha becomes solicited by the effect of season and doesn’t undergo prakopa. Kapha becomes liquified in vasanta ritu and gets aggravated and subsides automatically in grishma ritu.

          Time
Kapha ailments worsen at the starting of the day and night, In morning time kapha is the dominant principle.
Kapha becomes especially aggravated by coldness, during winter and spring, in the forenoon, in the evening, and soon after eating.

Circadian rhythm. Synchronising your daily routine with the natural daily rhythms enhances health.

Going to bed by 10PM at the end of the Kapha period takes advantage of the slow, dull Kapha qualities and encourages sound sleep.

6 am - 10 am is the Kapha cycle, when the cells of the body are in a (low) hypometabolic phase. The body feels slow, heavy, relaxed and calm which are all qualities of Kapha. This is the best time for physical and mental exercises.

6 pm - 10 pm .Kapha cycle. The second cycle of the day, begins with Kapha and its tendency to create a slow, relaxed evening. Time to slow down, for recreational activities. Sleep at 10 PM.

          SEASONAL RHYTHM - Ritucharya

As with daily rhythms, seasonal cycles that run throughout the year are matched with the Doshas. The earth revolves around the sun, causing:

          • Spring kapha season, which applies to months when it is predominantly wet and cool. Favour a diet that is lighter, drier, less oily. Favour warm food and drinks. • As Kapha goes out of balance in spring Kapha - balancing activities and diet are needed.

          • Spring is a combination of Pitta - Kapha.

          • In Late Winter sisira ritu Kapha undergoes only accumulation (caya / (चय) . by the use of food substances, which are unctuous cold etc.that are similar to Dosha. Kapha becomes solicited by the effect of season and doesn’t undergo Aggravation (prakopa) . Kapha becomes liquified in vasanta ritu and gets aggravated and subsides automatically in grishma ritu.

Symptoms which indicates the need for treatment are congestion, particularly in lungs and sinuses, sluggishness, swelling, oedema,, dull aching pain, lethargy, depression, heaviness, and weight gain. These are all signs of Kapha constitution, but the same symptoms may be experienced by another constitutional type if they have developed a water balance.                Ayurvedic Herbal Smoking

                 (धूम्रपान )

For the "Joie de vivre" medicated smoke should become a part of the daily routine. This is far from easy as it involves grinding parts of 32 plants such as Chandana, guggulu, kesar, cardemum, harenuka and many more and applying the paste on a thumb like reed, eight fingers long. When dried, the medicated cylinder should be put in the smoking pipe, lit with a little fat and enjoyed.

This is known as Dhumrapana or Ayurvedic herbal smoking. According to Ayurveda, a person who desires to take care of their health should inhale herbal smoke daily to treat or to prevent the onset of diseases, especially for the parts above the shoulders, due to increase of Kapha and Vata.

            Introduction
The composition of plants will vary when smoking is employed as therapy for various illness of the head and neck such as heaviness, pain in ear and eyes, hiccups, discharge from ear, eye and nose, toothache, spasm of the jaw and neck, voice disorders hair loss and so on. Illness of the head and neck (above the collar bone) are prevented by medicated smoke which is appropriate after bath, meals, vomiting, sneezing brushing teeth, snuffing, application of collyrium and sleep. Each time three puffs should be taken which will vary in frequency depending on weather it is for daily use or for evacuation therapy.  When properly used, smoking cleanses the chest throat and sense organs besides  lightening the head and controlling the dosas of vata and kapha which dominate the regions of the head, neck and chest. In excess, smoking can cause deafness, blindness, dizziness and internal bleeding.

            Dhumrapaan Instrument

These complications should be recognized and treated promptly. Smoking is forbidden after purgation and blood letting., in pregnancy, emanciation, fatigue, diabetes, alcoholism, poisoning and injury and after taking wine, milk, honey,, fatty substances and food with curd,

While smoking one should comfortably with the body and eyes straight and the mind focused, and inhale thrice through our nostril, while closing the other.. Three such rounds are recommended. In routine smoking, the pipe should be 36 fingers long, while for head evacuation and lubrication the length should be  24 and 32 fingers. The pipe should be straight with three pouches and a tip sized like a jujube stone.

Smoking in this manner from a distance, broken by joints and reduced through a pipe does not harm a senses. When used as therapy, the smoke is inhaled through nose for head and neck diseases and through the mouth for throat disorders. when smoking through the nostrils. the smoke should be exhaled through the mouth. Exhaling through the nostril after inhaling smoke through the mouth is harmful to the eyes and is not advised.
