Incompatible Food

                                                                  (विरुद्ध आहार ( Viruddha Aahar)

It is best to eat fruit separately. Eating carbohydrates and proteins at the same time hurting your digestive tract ? Can certain food  improve the efficacy of digestive tract.

It is no surprise in pharmacy store  today so many digestive and dietary aids for the stomach, along with pills for gas  and indigestion. Most of these conditions likely begins  with poor food combining. This is a subject of much debate amid the  growing concern  about diet .

"Eating wrong combination of food is directly proportion to ageing."

Introduction

Antagonism of food substances (Viruddha Aahar /विरुद्ध आहार)
Antagonism exists among food substances. They may be rooted in the food per se or may be related to certain properties, combinations, method or preparation, place, time, dose or the constitution of the individual and associated idiosyncrasies. The contrariness in food and drink is capable of perturbing doshas and causing a wide range of disorders which could even be fatal.

"Milk is best if you drink it alone or with sweet spices such as cardamom or nutmeg."

Food Combinations
All foods are not compatible. Certain foods when eaten or cooked together can disturb the normal function of the digestive fire (agni), and promote the accumulation of toxins (Ama) in the body. Various factors such as  taste, qualities,  and energies of certain foods as well as how long they take to digest, affect how well certain foods will combine. Heavy foods such as whole grains, dairy and starches do not combine well with light foods such as fruits, which gets digested quicker.

Another example when sour and acidic foods are combined with milk which is sweet and cooling this causes the milk to cuddle and become heavy in the intestine.

Milk

which is common article of food is incompatible with many other common items. Milk is antagonistic to all kinds of fish and the antagonism results in  serious occlusion of body channels and several other disorders. Radish, garlic , drumstick, tulsi, pot herb of jatuka (any herb grown for culinary use), kullatha (horse gram), black gram (urad), jamuna etc. and all sour liquids are incompatible with milk.

There are many other examples of similar incompatibilities. Meat, fish  with honey, sesame, jaggery, milk, black gram, fried mustard oil, rice cooked in milk, with fermented drink.

Adult people should drink lukewarm milk 2 hours after dinner.
Those who have acidity problem should drink milk at normal temperature instead of lukewarm.
Avoid taking milk at breakfast in the morning as it can cause phelgm problem.
Boil milk with cardamom and drink it lukewarm.
Fat free milk is better for diabetic, hypertension and obese persons. Due to this they do not get fat and get nutrients like proteins and calcium.
The people who do more physical work or want to gain weight, or children, they should take milk with fat.

The antagonism which relates to place, time, and other circumstances belong to different category. Antagonism of space occurs when rough and hot substance are used in dry and arid region, and cold and lubricant items in a wet region.
Antagonism of time occurs when rough and cold substances are consumed in winter and hot and sharp  foods in summer.
There are many other examples which illustrate similar antagonism in relation to the state of the digestive fire in the individual.
The processing of food, potency, bowel habits, health status, food and hygiene habits, diet code, cooking procedure, personal likes and dislikes,  and excess of rasas of three categories in food. Even the violation of the code for eating in private is a form of antagonism.

Antagonism of food may produce a variety of disorders which include impotence, blindness, cellulitis, fluid in the belly, suppuration, anal fistula, pallor, leucoderma,  fever and several others. This may even turn fatal.

Incompatible foods

Meat + Honey, sesame, Jaggery, . It can cause deafness, blindness,,tremors, nasal voice and death.

Meat + Honey

Milk, black gram
Radish +Milk : It causes skin diseases. However, it is advised to avoid eating Mooli before taking food because it may cause a burning sensation in the stomach due to its Ushna (hot) nature. As per Ayurveda, milk should not be taken after having Mooli as it is considered to be an incompatible food

Milk +Radish

Citrus fruit and milk. Orange juice and milk. The acidity of the citrus will cause curdling of the milk in the stomach and make it harder to digest. ... The pH quality will become more acidic when it is mixed with juice, and 80% of casein in the milk tends to agglutinate, or clump together.
Citrus fruit + Milk

Milk + Lemon :
Milk becomes acidic in many ways; for example, when an acid is directly added to the milk (e.g. lemon juice) or when the milk sours.  the caseins start to come closer together. They clump together until clumps can be seen by the naked eye. At this point, we can see the milk curdling.

Milk + Salt
It is bad to put salt in milk.It s because salt and milk have antagonistic or opposing qualities. When milk is used for the base of various savory curries and sauces, we are unknowingly causing great harm to our body.
The ill effects of these combinations may not immediately manifest in our system, but it may take years of bad eating for health problems to arise. So ensure that you don t combine milk with any of these foodstuffs.
Milk + Horse gram (Kulth  dal)
Milk + Green Vegetable: After eating green vegetables do not drink milk.

Do not combine acidic and alkaline foods.

Bananas and Milk

According to Ayurveda, eating bananas and milk together can diminish agni, or fire, which is the entity responsible for the digestion and metabolism of foods ( 11 ). Consuming bananas and milk is also anecdotally claimed to contribute to sinus congestion and increase the production of toxins in your body.
Though commonly eaten together, bananas and milk are challenging to digest together because their qualities are so different. Bananas are heating while milk is cooling. That alone is problematic. Further, bananas become sour as they break down. So now our digestive fire has to process a sour substance and milk at the same time.
Ever added a squeeze of lemon to milk? Or maybe you’ve poured a little milk into a tangy, fruity tea… only to watch it curdle instantly? What happens to these mismatched foods in the digestive tract is not much different.
When bananas and milk are eaten together, their opposing qualities tend to smother the digestive fire and can disrupt the balance of intestinal flora, which results in the creation of toxins. This combination also frequently causes congestion, colds, coughs, allergies, hives, and rashes. A similar situation arises when we combine any sour fruit with milk.

Nightshades and Cheese

This combination is simply too taxing for the digestive fire. A nightshade is a common name for a member of the plant family Solanaceae, which includes potatoes, bell peppers, tomatoes, eggplants, cayenne peppers, paprika etc.
Nightshades contain alkaloids, primarily as a means of defense against being damaged by insects. The alkaloids can be anywhere from mildly to fatally toxic to humans. As a result, diverse cultures around the world have long held an intriguing relationship with the nightshade family. Some have been used to make poisons, some contain incredibly addictive compounds such as nicotine, some are mind-altering, and others create an incredible sensation of heat in the mouth.
The bottom line is that nightshades contain a complex array of compounds that, once ingested, lead to a potentially dramatic cascade of chemical reactions in the body. According to Ayurveda all nightshades are believed to be somewhat difficult to digest and to have the capacity to disturb the doshas.
When we mix these inherently challenging nightshades with cheese—which is heavy, oily, and also difficult to digest—we can quickly overtax the digestive fire.
Beans and Cheese

Beans and cheese are similar in that they both tend to be heavy and are often difficult to digest. In order to break down properly, they both require a good deal of digestive strength. But, the similarities end there. Beans tend to taste mostly astringent and sweet, can be either heating or cooling (depending on the type of bean), and usually have a pungent post-digestive effect. Cheese, on the other hand, tastes predominantly sour, is almost always heating, and usually has a sour post-digestive effect.
The post-digestive effect of different foods occurs once that food has moved into the colon; it affects the urine, feces, sweat, and tissues—sometimes even at the cellular level. Two foods with distinct post-digestive effects are typically quite different from one another.
This is the case with beans and cheese; when they are eaten together, they tend to overwhelm and confuse the digestive fire. Meanwhile, their combined heaviness makes them even more difficult to process, often resulting in poor digestion and the accumulation of toxins (ama)

Incompatible food and its effect on the body
The food which hampers metabolism  because of contrary opposite qualities  of two foods  when combined  is Incompatible food. This is very important concept  which is mostly neglected  and thus not mostly  in practice.  Some foods when  taken together  are incompatible  are act as opposite / antagonist  to each other, hence may effect the body. Thus it is essential  to take care of incompatibility before consuming.

Food provide the body with the all necessary nutrients. While certain combinations  of foods are  parts of staple diet; the lentils with rice yet some do not go along well. The idea of incompatible food  can be fairly alien to us. In Ayurveda , compatibility of food is an important aspect of daily diet, and it is important to keep a track  of foods that do not go along together. Healthy and compatible diet and better health  and an incompatible diet  always create more hurdles in the way..

Such incorrect food combinations are known as Viruddha Aahar- the food that do not get along. Frequent consumption of Viruddha Ahar  is linked with several physical ailments. It may also advocate the development of various toxins in the body. It is the cause of several diseases and health complexities. Surprisingly our lack of awareness  about food combinations  comes in the way of our health.

Digestion, after all, is a chemical process, it involves lots of acids that break  food particles and allows digestion. When incompatible foods are  processed together, it creates adverse effects on metabolism.

  • For example - deep fried oily foods should  not be consumed with milk. Milk does not react well to oil and fat, it creates gastric issues and delays the process of digestion. Therefore it is important to keep in check the things we eat together.
  • And it is important to keep track of the  eating habits for better digestion.
  • Further, food incompatibility cancels out the nutritional values of food items, so it is important to know what not to eat with what.
  • Certain food items must never be combined to remain safe from harmful reaction on the body. i.e
  • Dose Incompatibility  : Honey and ghee are considered Matra Virudhha , when consumed together  it may increase the core body temperature drastically.
Honey + Ghee 1:1

  • Nutritional values are cancelled : Fish and milk are considered Veerya virudhha which means that the nutritional values  are cancelled out in such combinations. Milk + fishSevere indigestion, food poisoning.

Milk + Fish

  • Also fruits do  not go along with dairy items and are considered to be an incompatible combination.
Yogurt with Fruits

  • Season & Time of the day: It makes the difference when it comes to food compatibility.
  • Dairy item in the night can slow the process of metabolism. It can cause excessive production of phlegm in the body.
  • Follow seasonal regime :Eating pungent are too spicy substance  during the summer and cold substance in the winter is against the rule of  the season. Considering India's hot and humid climate during the summer, too spicy and pungent food items  cause metabolism disorder. Similarly cold food items during the winter may cause adverse effects on health..
Such ill combinations of  items may slow down the process of metabolism as an immediate reaction. Various types of gastrointestinal diseases to fever, anemia, skin diseases, and infertility are caused. Such type of wrong combinations even leads to death. So it is important to keep track of the combinations of food
.
                                                        "Detox is the Remedy".

Few of the Incompatible Foods are as follows :
  • Heated honey or honey with hot things (even with hot water)
  • Heated curd / buttermilk.
  • Dairy with meat.
  • Mustard oil and curcuma (turmeric)
  • Milk pudding and sweet pudding with rice.
  • Cheese and meat omelet.
  • Hot drinks +   Mangoes, cheese, yogurt, meat , fish and starches.
  • Leftovers + Freshly cooked food.
  • Raw Food + Cooked food (especially in large quantity)
There are few foods which are in daily practice. Some of the immediate consequences of bad food combinations are acidity, gas, bloating, stomachache, nausea, fatigue and constipation. While short term  effects can clear up within a day or two, long term food combining  can lead to more severe problems like bad breath, dry skin, rashes, chronic inflammation, poor sleep, low energy, reduced immunity, skin diseases and chronic digestion issues.

Most people feel a surge of energy and naturally loose weight once they start following several simple  food combining rules.

Note : Reason for incompatibility of these foods could be improper  quantity, improper processing, improper mixing, intra reaction, reaction of body on food, inappropriate combination, antagonist property.

Also a person who is accustomed to exercise will have minimal / no effect on incompatibility. Even if a person is accustomed to incompatible foods, it is advised to slowly stop it in a tapering manner.
Regular intake of such food in sedentary lifestyle affects the skin and hair.

Factors that can lessen the Effects of Bad Food Combinations

"A strong digestive fire (Agni) can be the most powerful tool to deal with "bad" food combinations."

Different quantities of each food involved in  a combination can sometimes help significantly. . for instance equal quantities by weight of ghee and honey are a bad combination.. s ghee is cooling, but honey is heating, whereas mixing a 2:1 ratio is not toxic. The reason for this can be acertained to prabhav or effect, the unexplained.

  • Very often spices and herbs are added in Ayurvedic cooking to help  make foods compatible or to ease a powerful effect, e.g cooling coriander powder in very spicy food.
  • If our bodies have become accustomed to a certain food combination though many years of use, such as eating cheese with apples, then it is likely that our body has made some adaptation or  become accustomed to this. Which is not to say that  we should continue this practice, but to explain why the newcomer to apples and cheese may experience a strong case of indigestion whilst the "old-timer"digests it adequately.
  • Antidotes, like cardamom in coffee, or ghee and black pepper with potatoes, often can help elevate some of the negative effects.(Coffee is stimulating ultimately depressing to the system, and potatoes cause gas.
  • If food with different and possibly aggravating qualities, such as mixture of vegetables are cooked together in the same pot, the foods tends to lean how to get along. Using appropriate spices and herbs helps with this too.
  • Eating a "bad" combination occasionally usually does not upset the digestion too much.

Some Useful Tips To Aid digestion

  • As cabbage is gas forming food should be cooked with sunflower oil along with turmeric and mustard seeds.
  • Eat 1/2 teaspoonful fresh grated ginger with a pinch of rock salt before each meal to stimulate Agni.
  • Salt also aids digestion, and helps to retain water.
  • Alkalis help digestion and regulate  gastric fire.
  • Ghee stimulates agni and improves digestion.
  • Small sips of warm water during a meal will aid digestion and absorption of food. Do not drink iced water as it slows agni and digestion. Indeed, ice water should not be  taken under most circumstances, as it is too shocking to the system.
  • Proper chewing is essential to good digestion, ensuring food gets thoroughly mixed with saliva.
  • A cup of butter milk at the end of a meal also aids the digestive process. Make by blending 1/4th cup of curd with 2 pinches of ginger and cumin powder in 1 cup water.
  • Ideally one should fill the stomach with one third food, one third  liquid and one third should be empty.
  • As potato is gas forming food should be cooked in ghee with black pepper.
  • A onion causes burning should be consumed along with salt, lemon, curd and mustard seeds.
  • As garlic can increase acidity should be consumed with powdered coconut and lemon

Treatment

The treatment of this disorders depends primarily on :
  • Evacuation measures such as vomiting (emesis)  and purgation.
  • Antidote to quell perturbed dosas and
  • Enhancing body resistance by prior or
  • Gradual administration of the offending substances. The antagonisms mitigated by habituation, ingesting only small quantities of the substance.
  • Strong digestive fire
  • Physical activity
  • Young and the strength of the individual.
