Tomato flu is a kind of viral infection in children aged below five years. The fever is accompnied by rashes, skin irritation and dehydration. Infected children may develop blisters which generally appears red in color hence the name tomato flu or Tomato fever. Medically it is known as the hand , foot and mouth disease.

Tomato flu is named after the tomato shaped blisters that appears on the body.  Highly contageous. This flu is self limiting one. This means that the symptoms will resolve overtime on their own if supportive care is given.

Introduction
Children are at an increase risk of exposure to 'Tomato Flu' which can spread through close contact . Children are also prone to the infection through the use of nappies, touching unclean surfaces and putting things directly into the mouth.

Tomato Fever (or Tomato Flu) is endemic to Karela. The disease may be an effect of chikungunya or Dengue fever or a new variant of viral hand, foot and mouth disease. An ongoing outbreak was identified in the in Kollam district on May 6 2022.

Vulnerable population
The flu affects children below the age of five.

Transmission
Tomato fever is contagious. It can transmit quickly from one person to another.

Cause
  • However, its cause is still unknown whether it is related to chikungunya, a viral fever or a dengue fever.

Symptoms


  • Red spots on hands and legs feet and buttocks. 
  • Common Influenza like symptoms. 
  • High fever
  • Rashes
  • Bodyache
  • Nausea.
  • Dehydration
  • Lethargy
  • Cough & Cold
  • Sneezing
  • Runny Nose
  • Dizziness
  • Joint pain / Swelling of joints.
  • Diarrhea
  • Skin irritation
  • Stomach cramps
  • In some cases, it may also change the colour of the legs and the hands.

Preventing Measures
  • Avoid scratching the blisters.
  • Keep the child hydrated.
  • Maintain clean surroundings.
  • Avoid contact with the infected person.
  • Approach the nearest health center.
  • Utensils, clothes and other items used by the infected persons must be sanitized to prevent the flu from spreading.

Treatment
There is no specific medication for treating the disease and it may run its course with time.
  • Paracetamol to relieve aches and fever.
  • Rest
  • Hydration : Fluid intake would also help counteract dehydration.
  • Sponge bath
  • Isolation
  • Better washing practices
  • And Sanitizing may help prevent contagion.
